Netflix Reveals Fear Street: Prom Queen Ensemble For New Horror Movie
Netflix has announced the cast for its upcoming film Fear Street: Prom Queen. The lineup includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, and Chris Klein, alongside seasoned actors Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston. Ariana Greenblatt (of Barbie and Ahsoka fame) is rumored to have a supporting role, as she has been spotted on the set.
A Bloody Competition
Fear Street: Prom Queen will be directed by Matt Palmer from a screenplay he co-wrote with Donald McLeary. Producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson for Chernin Entertainment, with Yvonne Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine serving as executive producers. Caroline Pitofsky will oversee production for Chernin Entertainment.
The story begins during prom season at Shadyside High, where the “It Girls” are ruthlessly competing for the Prom Queen title. However, the dynamic changes dramatically when an outsider unexpectedly receives a nomination. As other girls begin vanishing under mysterious circumstances, the class of ’88 finds themselves in for an unforgettable prom night filled with suspense and terror.
Another Shadyside Killer
This latest Fear Street installment draws inspiration from the 15th book in the original novel series by R.L. Stine. Published in 1992, Fear Street: Prom Queen is set at Shadyside High School, where (like the series) Prom Queen candidates are singled out and brutally murdered. When only one girl remains, everyone wonders if she will be the killer’s next target.
The main characters in Fear Street: Prom Queen include Lizzie McVay, Rachel, Chelsea Richards, and Simone. Lizzie McVay is a high school student and one of the five candidates for Prom Queen. Rachel, Lizzie’s friend, is also in the running for the crown. Chelsea Richards is a shy and lonely girl looking for love, while Simone is another character in the story.
The Fear Street Trilogy
Fear Street: Prom Queen is the fourth entry in the horror series following the Fear Street Trilogy comprising Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, and Part Three: 1666, which debuted weekly on the streaming platform in July 2021. While R.L. Stine’s novels typically target a younger audience, Netflix’s adaptations were much darker, with R ratings for violence, gore, sexual content, and drug use.
A Successful Netflix Experiment
The Fear Street Trilogy was directed by Leigh Janiak, who co-wrote the script with various collaborators. The overarching story follows a group of teenagers as they try to break a centuries-old curse haunting their town. Initially developed by 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment, the distribution rights for the films were later acquired by Netflix following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
David Scwimmer Heading To Horror
The Fear Street: Prom Queen casting comes after Disney+ and Hulu revealed that Friends star David Schwimmer would lead the upcoming second season of Goosebumps (also based on a series of books by Stine). Schwimmer will play Anthony, a former botany professor and divorced parent of teenage twins, who has to balance caring for an elderly parent while having his children for the summer.
While Fear Street: Prom Queen does not have a release date yet, The Fear Street Trilogy can be streamed on Netflix.
