Netflix Gets Fan-Favorite Series Adaptations Of Author’s Beloved Supernatural Universe

By Britta DeVore | Published

Over the last few years, AMC has been bringing the stories of one of supernatural fiction’s most iconic writers to life, but now it’s another streamer’s turn to draw in the viewership numbers. On August 19, the series adaptations of Anne Rice’s beloved book series, Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches, will be available for Netflix subscribers. Although the former just celebrated its second season finale, only the first will be available during its crossover.

From The Big Screen To The Small Screen

Before it was a TV series, Interview with the Vampire was a smash-hit film directed by Neil Jordan with an all-star cast led by Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Slater, and Antonio Banderas. And, with the episodic version of Anne Rice’s novel series being just as much of a fan favorite, Netflix is undoubtedly excited to get its hands on the title and ride those viewership waves.

More Faithful To The Source Material

Anne Rice Interview with the Vampire

Sticking even closer to Anne Rice’s source material than was done in the movie, Netflix customers who tune in for Interview with the Vampire are in for a dark journey of romance, race, economic standings, and abuse. The show centers around the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) as he recounts his centuries-long story to a journalist named Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian).

Weaving his tale, Louis speaks about his turning at the fangs of Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), his struggle with teenage vampire Claudia (Bailey Bass), the toxic relationship that he has with Lestat, and his ever-changing feelings toward being immortal.

Both seasons of the first title to come from what’s now been dubbed Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe have garnered largely positive reviews, which should be promising to those eager for its Netflix arrival. On Rotten Tomatoes, both installments landed near-perfect approval ratings of 98 percent, marking yet another success from the network that previously brought audiences The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and more.

Mayfair Witches On Netflix

Like Interview with the Vampire, Mayfair Witches will also drop its first season on the streamer later this month as the follow-up season only wrapped filming back in the spring. Starring Alexandra Daddario, the production is just another tale from Anne Rice’s long list of literary classics that will fill Netflix users with delight.

The series centers on Daddario’s Dr. Rowan Fielding, a brilliant neurosurgeon who discovers she’s the next in line to inherit a powerful coven of witches who have long been haunted and hunted by an evil spirit.

Mixed Reviews For Season 1

Along with Daddario, the first season of Mayfair Witches boasts performances from Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Harry Hamlin (L.A. Law), and Tongayi Chirisa (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts). Unlike the other Anne Rice favorite that will be receiving a new set of eyes on Netflix, Mayfair Witches didn’t exactly knock it out of the park with its debut set of episodes. Instead of the almost perfect score that Interview with the Vampire received, Mayfair Witches only clocked 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Still, those who have an interest in either of the first two AMC titles to come from Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe may want to take the chance and binge both Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches when they arrive on Netflix on August 19. With a separate series on the way that will delve into the world of the secret society known as the Talamasca, now’s your chance to get caught up before it gets too overwhelming.
