Netflix’s Devil May Cry Anime Unloads A Super Stylish First Look
Netflix is on a role with video game anime adaptations, from the award-winning success of League of Legends’ Arcane to Castlevania, the company announced a fresh slate of new series coming up, including Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and another Witcher show. Between the new announcements, Netflix also gave fans a first look at Devil May Cry, coming 17 years after the first anime adaptation of the Capcom instant classic, and as befitting Dante, it’s dripping with Smokin’ Sick Style.
Voicing Dante in Devil May Cry is Johnny Yong Bosch, who ironically first joined the franchise by voicing Nero, the Scrappy Doo-like replacement for the demon hunter in Devil May Cry 4.
The teaser gives a few hints as to the plot in the closing seconds, possibly confirming that the series will be adapting Devil May Cry 3, arguably the best game in the franchise. The White Rabbit watching the clock tick down to midnight appeared in the manga adaptation, hiring Dante for a simple rescue operation. Earlier in the trailer, there’s a shot of Dante with pizza, which, with his classic outfit, echos the opening of the game and the first shootout in his office.
There are little details in the trailer that are also lifted right out of the games, from the way Dante holds his guns, Ebony and Ivory, to how he stands with his sword at an angle behind his head and even how he’s shown dashing around a room to dodge gunfire. Devil May Cry, so far at least, looks like it’s benefiting from the growing trend of successful video game adaptions. This is especially good because as fun as the games are, the latest in the series, Devil May Cry 5, will be six years old by the time the anime is out, so hopefully, it will rekindle fan interest.

Devil May Cry was first adapted into an anime in 2007 as a bridge between the first and second games. Taking a different angle, the series had Dante unofficially adopt a little girl, Patty, which let fans see a whole new side of the character. Lady and Trish, his usual demon-hunting partners, were also along for the ride in a series of self-contained episodes, ranging from hunting a serial killer to handling a rock star who used the powers of a siren to become famous.
There are still a few months before Devil May Cry hits Netflix, and a lot more information to come out about the series, but it looks like fans can start getting excited.

Given how Netflix has handled other franchises, from Castlevania to Tomb Raider and even Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), there’s no reason to start doubting them now. Unless we see clips of Dante fighting a large, demonic ape because fans would rather forget Devil May Cry 2 ever happened.
