One of Netflix’s breakout shows has hit a significant snare in its production. The popular Dead To Me series is suffering a massive delay due to reported high numbers of confirmed Covid cases. This is troubling news. Dead to Me Season 3 was set to remain filming but has now been scheduled to finish its final week of shooting in 2022 due to the rapid increase of positive tests on set.
According to reports, a production office member for the Netflix show had first contracted symptoms around December 13, leading to a positive test days after. The same happened with a crewmember who works for transportation had also tested positive, along with their contacts. CBS TV Studios decided to jump in to initiate their contact tracing, which is essentially tracking all of those in contact with the ones infected so that the virus would not be spread any further. Apart from those that had initially tested positive, there were no additional positive tests reported. But as such, the show will now be delayed to remain production until after the holidays. Netflix is not about to take any chances.
Dead to Me has become a commercial and critical success with Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, and James Marsden all starring. The show has garnered such high praise that Applegate has already been nominated for an Emmy for her performance in its first season. The show also logged 30 million viewers in 2019, making it one of Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows of that year. The following year would see the show achieve another four Emmy nominations, with casting, and two nominations for lead actress going to both Applegate and Cardellini.
Although the majority of shows go well past three seasons, Dead To Me’s creator and showrunner Liz Feldman feels as if this is the perfect time to stop the show. She believes that the show’s ending came to her in a sort of premonition and that Dead To Me season 3 would be the final season shown on Netflix. When interviewed by Deadline, Feldman had this to say about the show: “Then there was a certain point when we were in production on Season 2 when the end of the show came to me, pretty profoundly, so I realized, ‘I know the story that I have to tell’ and Season 3 feels like the right time to do that.” Sometimes it’s good to end shows while they are ahead and don’t become stale. Of course, that doesn’t stop dedicated fans from wanting more of a great series that they’ve come to enjoy.
Comedic actors Will Ferrell and Adam McKay both serve as executive producers for the show, so there is a strong likelihood that the show is worthy of its high praise. Although fans will have to wait some additional time, the first two seasons of Dead To Me are now on Netflix for binge-watching purposes. Fans can catch up with the series so far before Dead to Me season 3 finally drops. It’s unknown how the delayed production will affect the next season’s release. Hopefully, the show can resume production and finish wrapping in the beginning quarter of 2022.
