Netflix Horror Comedy Will Make You Laugh And Scream
Los Angeles has all kinds of vampires, but Bud Jablonski only is interested in the kind that feed on human blood in the Netflix comedy-horror film Day Shift. Played by Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx, Bud is a vampire hunter who has some trouble making ends meet. His former wife is moving to Florida with their daughter, and they’re counting on Bud to pay for her private school tuition and braces as well as pay off his mounting debts.
A Problematic Vampire Hunter
Bud’s cover job is working the day shift as a pool cleaner, which means he mostly works at the homes of the very wealthy who can afford a pool in Southern California.
One day while cleaning a pool, he encounters two vampires inside the home and goes to battle with them. After killing each, he pulls their fangs with a pair of pliers, but he can’t get the price he needs when he tries to sell them.
A frustrated Bud tries to rejoin the local union for vampire hunters in hopes of earning more money in addition to his Day Shift job cleaning pools. In Southern California, nearly everyone is part of a union, including those who kill the undead.
Problem is, Bud has a history of violations as a vampire hunter, which makes it hard to get back into the union.
Snoop Swoops In
Big John Elliot, played by Snoop Dogg, helps Bud get back into the union, but the union boss only lets him work the day shift. Vampires only hunt and feed at night, so working during the day in addition to cleaning pools makes it a hard road, but one that Bud must travel to make ends meet.
Worse, he has to have his union rep supervise his vampire-hunting activities.
Vampires
Actor Dave Franco plays the union rep named Seth, who becomes Bud’s partner hunting vampires during the daylight hours. Any good vampire film needs an undead antagonist, and we get one played by Karla Souza and named Audrey San Fernanda. Audrey has a two things motivating her actions in the film.
One is her desire to avenge the deaths of the two vampires Bud killed while cleaning pools. The other is to restore vampires’ prior god-like status and rule over all mankind.
A Different Kind Of Vampire Movie
Bud’s not down for that, and neither should audiences who get to watch the 112-minute Netflix comedy-horror that sheds new light on the LA vampire scene in a way that no one has done before.
Director J.J. Perry turns the traditional vampire story on its ear in a fun and fashionable manner that certainly makes Day Shift an entertaining film. It’s an ideal way for fans of comedies and vampire horror stories to enjoy both in one sitting with the always outstanding Jamie Foxx in the lead role.

The 2022 film is a Netflix original that never aired on theater screens. The only way to view it is to stream Day Shift on Netflix, which many find to be a good way to spend an hour and 53 minutes due to the combination of action, comedy, and horror with Foxx leading the fun.
Like audiences who have seen it, I enjoyed the film and give if a solid 3.5 stars out of 5. It’s not a high-brow production, but it is a fun and entertaining one.
