Netflix Daredevil Official Marvel Canon In Disney Show?
Echo executive producer Brad Winderbaum says Netflix’s Daredevil series is canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, forming part of its central timeline.
“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline. That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.'”
Marvel Sacred Timeline
It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff,” Winderbaum continued.
“We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway. But now that some time has passed, now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline.”
Daredevil Easter Eggs
Interestingly, Marvel has not directly addressed the inclusion of Netflix’s Daredevil in the MCU. Nonetheless, speculation suggesting that the upcoming Echo and Daredevil: Born Again series include references to the Netflix show has been rife since April 2023.
Furthermore, an Easter egg from the original Daredevil was spotted in Secret Invasion – the first Phase Five series of the MCU.
Daredevil: Born Again Creative Changes
Daredevil: Born Again is currently undergoing creative changes following a revamp of the show’s directors and writers in September 2023.
The first season was said to consist of 18 episodes, with Michael Cuesta directing the first installment. But despite a significant amount of filming being completed, a new showrunner took the reins.
Due to the creative overhaul of the series, the exact episode count for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 is uncertain, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking over directing duties.
Following the shift, Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio expressed confidence that the show will maintain the same “feel” as its Netflix counterpart.
Thoughtful Approach
D’Onofrio also acknowledged Marvel’s thoughtful approach to the series. Before Daredevil: Born Again is released, D’Onofrio will join Alaqua Cox and Charlie Cox in Echo is set for release on January 9 on Disney+.
Created by Marion Dayre, the story follows the central character’s return home to re-establish connections with her family and native roots while leaving her criminal past behind.
Daredevil On Netflix
Netflix’s Daredevil was produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios and released on the streaming platform. Its first season premiered in April 2015 and concluded with its third season in October 2018.
The series featured Charlie Cox as blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who fights crime as the vigilante Daredevil by night in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City.
The series also details how Murdock was blinded by a chemical accident as a child but gained heightened senses that allow him to navigate the world and fight crime.
The first season primarily focused on Daredevil’s battle against Wilson Fisk, a powerful and corrupt businessman who becomes the primary antagonist.
Darker, Mature Tone
Netflix’s Daredevil is known for its darker, more mature tone compared to other Marvel television series. Its action sequences, particularly the hallway and stairwell fight scenes, received critical acclaim for their realism and intensity.
The series also featured characters like Matt’s law partner and best friend Foggy Nelson (played by Elden Henson) and their secretary Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll).
Other characters include Claire Temple (played by Rosario Dawson), a nurse who becomes a key ally to Daredevil, and Elektra Natchios (played by Elodie Yung), a mysterious and skilled warrior with ties to Matt’s past. Daredevil maintained unofficial links to the larger MCU, often referencing events from the films.
Daredevil Storytelling
Moreover, Daredevil was directly connected to other Marvel Netflix shows like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. This led to a crossover miniseries called The Defenders.
Despite receiving critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances, Daredevil was canceled by Netflix after its third season, along with other shows.
The cancellation was attributed to the end of a deal between Netflix and Marvel.
