Netflix Crime Series Star Joins Highly Anticipated Horror Follow-Up
The cast of the upcoming New Line horror flick Weapons continues to add A-list talent. After casting Josh Brolin, the film has added Emmy-winner Julia Garner as his co-star. The film is directed by Zach Cregger, who made the surprise 2022 horror hit Barbarian.
Julia Garner’s Star Keeps Rising
Julia Garner seems like the perfect addition to Weapons, which is one of the most highly-anticipated upcoming horror releases. Barbarian ended up opening at number one with just a shoestring budget of $4.5 million, garnering universal critical acclaim and bringing in over $45 million worldwide at the box office. There’s no word yet on what Weapons will be about, as they’re currently keeping the plot closely under wraps.
From Crime Dramas To The MCU
This is the second big project that Julia Garner has been attached to recently, as Deadline revealed that she is joining the cast of the massive MCU project Fantastic Four as the Silver Surfer. She’ll be joining the previously cast Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the blockbuster superhero flick. Funnily enough, Pedro Pascal actually was attached to star in Weapons but ended up dropping out due to scheduling conflicts.
Award-Winning Role As Ruth
Julia Garner is best known for her work as Ruth Langmore on the Netflix series Ozark, for which she won three Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmys. Other than Weapons, her other upcoming projects include the Blumhouse/Universal film Wolf Man and the Paramount psychological thriller Apartment 7A. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin is hot off the massive success of Denis Villenueve’s Dune Part: Two.
Barbarian Was A Massive Success
Julia Garner and Josh Brolin’s Weapons will also be produced by Zach Cregger, who is bringing back his Barbarian producing team that includes Roy Lee for Vertigo and JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight Pictures. Miri Yoon will also join the producing team for Vertigo.
Another Comic Turned Horror Director Success Story
Along with Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, Renate Reinsve is the only other cast member announced for Weapons. For now, the only reported details about Zach Cregger’s film are that it will be a horror epic with multiple intertwined stories. Along with directing, Cregger also wrote the project.
Cregger was previously best known for being a member of The Whitest Kids U Know comedy troupe, and Barbarian was his debut effort. It was a stunning debut, to say the least, and Weapons definitely has some high expectations for it. Undoubtedly, Josh Brolin and Julia Garner’s casting should help bring in some box office dollars and make it as big of a success as Barbarian.
Julia Garner Is Keeping Busy
Julia Garner and Josh Brolin are set to start filming Weapons in mid-May, so we should hopefully learn some more details about this project soon. Perhaps we’ll also get more casting announcements in the coming weeks as the film gears up for production. As for when we can expect to see Garner in Fantastic Four, we’ll have to wait until July 2025 to see how that turns out.
With plenty of time between now and the release of Fantastic Four, we’ll likely get a glimpse of Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer character before then. Like Weapons, Fantastic Four is also keeping plot details under wraps. We’ll keep you updated on both projects as their release dates get closer.
