Netflix Gives Hit Crime Series Season 2 Order After Just Two Months
Just two months ago, the hit Spanish language series Berlin aired its first season on Netflix, to immediate popularity and critical acclaim. The streamer has just announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the series, which is made by the same team behind Money Heist, has already been renewed for a second season. Despite only being on the platform for a short period, Netflix sees the potential the series has to take its multifaceted crime story to new and exciting places.
Berlin Is A Prequel To Money Heist
Berlin serves as a prequel to Money Heist, which centers on the life and early work of Andrés de Fonollosa, known to his criminal associates under the alias Berlin. The series, which takes place before the events of the original show, is titled La Casa De Papel: Berlin in its original Spanish, making it clear to fans of the original that the two shows are narratively intertwined. Berlin has already entered Netflix’s top 10 most popular shows, despite only having aired several months ago.
A New Score
The social media post that announced Berlin’s second season featured a brief video of the eponymous bank robber getting into an elevator with the words “Berlin 2” superimposed onto it, shared by the official Netflix accounts. There has been no word yet on the plot for the second season, though fans can likely expect to see Berlin and company locking in for another major score, perhaps in a new and exciting locale. The first season followed the eccentric band of criminals to Paris where the title character planned and executed a highly elaborate robbery, though he ultimately lost most of the money made in the endeavor shortly after escaping.
More Stories To Tell
The first season of Berlin concluded with something of a cliffhanger, with the main character setting his sights on a massive new heist after failing to secure his financial future. Still, there was no assurance at the time that Berlin would be renewed for future seasons at Netflix, so the season’s conclusion could easily have served as the finale of the show, before transitioning into the events of Money Heist. Instead, it seems that the streamer, as well as most fans of the show, feels that there are more adventures to be had with the crew of misfits before bridging the gap between the prequel and the original 2017 series.
Filming Won’t Happen For Another Year
Fans of the series shouldn’t get too excited, however, as filming for the second season isn’t on track to begin until 2025. In the meantime, the Berlin writers will likely be hard at work with Netflix producers to craft the scripts and pre-production prerequisites for the beloved series. Berlin stars an incredible cast of Spanish-speaking actors who, while not being household names yet in the United States, clearly have big projects ahead of them.
The Whole Franchise Is Available On Netflix
The series includes performances from Pedro Alonso, Begoña Vargas, Samantha Siqueiros, Michelle Jenner, Julio Peña, and Itziar Ituño. The full first season of Berlin is currently available to stream on Netflix, along with all five seasons of Money Heist.
