New Netflix Crime Comedy Gets Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

It’s Glen Powell’s world and we’re just living in it – at least that’s what it’s felt like recently as the actor continues to rake in cash and popularity from every job he lands. Most recently, the Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone but You star will soon be seen in Hit Man on Netflix (June 7), with the film already landing an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Kicking and punching its way into select cinemas on May 24, the Richard Linklater-helmed feature is already a hit with audiences and critics alike, nabbing an impressive Tomatometer score of 97 percent with an audience score of 95 percent as of this writing.

Glen Powell Is A Master Of Disguise

Based on author Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article, Hit Man is the perfect flick to land on Netflix as it’s a romance, drama, action, and comedy feature all rolled into one. The film follows Gary Johnson (Powell), who works part-time with the New Orleans Police Department but soon finds himself in more of a high-stakes role after he’s given the task of pretending to be a hitman and arresting the folks who hire him.

A master of disguise, Gary takes pride in his work, fully giving himself over to the various roles he finds himself playing through costumes, accents, and mannerisms.

A Dangerous Romance

Perp after perp, Gary continues to bust the hit man hirers but eventually, his plan hits a snag when he meets a woman seeking his services to wipe out her abusive husband. As the pair spends more and more time together, Gary can’t help but fall in love with the desperate woman, quickly putting both of their lives in danger. Starring opposite Powell in Hit Man as the woman looking for a permanent solution to her spousal issues is Adria Arjona in her latest pairing with Netflix since 2021’s Sweet Girl.

Past Work From Linklater And Powell

Hit Man also marks the second pairing between its director Richard Linklater and Netflix, as the filmmaker previously brought audiences the animated coming-of-age comedy Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood back in 2022.

Coming-of-age films are Linklater’s bread and butter, having previously stood at the helm of classics like Dazed and Confused, SubUrbia, and Boyhood, as well as favorites such as School of Rock, Bernie, and the Bad News Bears 2005 remake. Quickly becoming frequent collaborators, Linklater and Powell have previously worked together on Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood and Everybody Wants Some!! the latter of which is considered to be a follow-up to Dazed and Confused.

Anyone But You And Twisters

Beyond his work in Hit Man, Glen Powell already has another hit streaming on Netflix as his impressive box office grosser, Anyone but You has been one of the platform’s most popular titles since landing at the end of April. This summer, audiences will catch the actor in action in Twisters which serves as a follow-up to the iconic 1996 movie, Twister

Stream Hit Man This Weekend On Netflix

When it arrives this weekend, Hit Man will be going up against competition on Netflix that includes the Jennifer Lopez-led sci-fi adventure film Atlas, Sony’s flop-turned-favorite Madame Web, and the unstoppable monster flick, Godzilla Minus One. But, if the first wave of reviews is any indication, those titles better watch out as Hit Man seems destined for the top spot.
