Mind-Bending Netflix Comedy Series Needs Season 2 Yesterday

By TeeJay Small | Published

In the past handful of years, Netflix has completely taken over the comedy circuit with a number of high-profile stand-up specials, sketch comedy programs, and hilarious original films. One of the best outings from the streamer within this niche is 2020’s Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, which, at the time of this writing, has only received one season on the Netflix platform. The short-lived yet critically acclaimed series is desperately in need of a second installment, as the Aunty Donna brand is hotter now than ever before.

Insane Australians

For those that don’t know, Aunty Donna is a sketch comedy trio operating out of Australia, consisting of Mark Bonanno, Broden Kelly, and Zachary Ruane. The group has been joined by a number of integral behind-the-scenes players throughout their career, including writer-director Sam Lingham, director Max Miller, and musical composer Thomas Zahariou (formerly Tom Armstrong).

Long before the Aunty Donna crew linked with Netflix, the gang produced a litany of viral sketch comedy videos across YouTube, and have even performed live in international comedy tours.

Pure Chaos From Start To Finish

With Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Netflix subscribers were treated to six episodes of unmitigated chaos from the troupe, resulting in some of the biggest laughs I’ve ever personally had while browsing the platform. The show centers on the gang as they share a Southern California home, paid for by executive producer Ed Helms, and encounter an array of absurd adventures such as joining the Olympics, hunting for pirate’s treasure, and setting the table for a dinner date with the Queen of England.

Everyone That Watches It Loves It

Shortly after the inaugural season of Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun premiered on Netflix, the series reached critical and audience acclaim, culminating in a positively shocking 100 percent certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 94 percent audience score to match. This should truly come as no surprise, as the ultra-bingeable series contains some incredibly creative gags, lots of over-the-top humor that doesn’t alienate crowds with needless politics, and some truly inspired silliness that is positively infectious.

Four Years And No Sequel

Since Aunty Donna’s 2020 collaboration with Netflix was such a smash hit, it’s truly baffling that the series never received a season 2 order. This is especially apparent now that the group’s latest effort, Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe, has been making waves on the Australian video-on-demand service ABC iView. As far as I can tell from the limited clips I’ve seen online, the Coffee Cafe looks to be just as funny as Big Ol’ House of Fun, as the gang has only gotten funnier and more surreal in the last few years.

The Only Season Is On Netflix

REVIEW SCORE

In fact, if you can manage to watch just one episode of Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun on Netflix without succumbing to your urge to binge through all six brief installments in one sitting, I will personally give you a chest full of gold doubloons, or my name isn’t Cow-Doy.

Those interested in catching Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun can stream the hilarious series on Netflix today. With any luck, perhaps fans will be treated to additional Netflix collaborations with the troupe in the near future.
