Netflix Comedy Genius Teams With Everyone’s Favorite Marvel Star

By TeeJay Small | Updated

If you’re a comedy fan, you’re no doubt familiar with the comedic stylings of both Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. Robinson, who once wrote for Saturday Night Live, is best known for his Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave, while Paul Rudd is an A-lister leading the cast of, among other things, a number of Marvel superhero films. Now, thanks to some first-look images posted on X (formerly Twitter), fans are seeing the duo share the big screen in Friendship, an exciting new movie.

Friendship

According to an official post from the Toronto International Film Festival, Friendship is a movie starring Robinson and Rudd, which will premiere this September during the TIFF Midnight Madness event. The film is written and directed by Andrew DeYoung in his feature-length directorial debut, though he holds existing directing credits for numerous episodes of hilarious television shows. These shows include Man Seeking Woman, A.P. Bio, Dave, Pen15, and the Taika Waititi-led Max original Our Flag Means Death.

Though Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson are credited in the leading roles, there are tons of other notable stars in the Friendship movie, including Kate Mara, Meredith Garretson, Jack Dylan Grazer, Conner O’Malley, and Parks and Recreation‘s Jon Glaser.

Still, the biggest draw of the film will likely come from fans of I Think You Should Leave, who will no doubt flock to theaters to see Robinson bounce his trademark blend of awkwardness and irreverence off of Paul Rudd’s upbeat affability, especially if the duo are allowed to improvise some of their dialogue.

The Genius Of Tim Robinson

Given that the first images have only just hit the web, fans currently know very little about the Friendship movie. From what we can tell, the film will center on Tim Robinson’s Craig Waterman, a nervous, awkward, insecure man who desperately wishes to strike up a friendship with his charismatic new neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd). As Craig and Austin begin to forge an unlikely friendship, Craig’s family security threatens to become wholly unraveled by another neighbor named Brian.

Awkward Nervousness Meets Terminally Optimistic

Based on this brief synopsis alone, fans across X have already begun looking forward to a wide release of the film. Thanks to Robinson’s existing array of comedy sketches on his Netflix series, it’s easy to imagine the general vibe of Craig Waterman in all his nervous glory. Still, fans will have to wait and see what the Friendship movie has in store if they want to see Robinson pulling off the character completely straight or throwing a few major comedic curveballs into the mix.

Premiering This Fall

More news and information about Friendship is sure to arise in the coming months as the movie gets closer and closer to its TIFF premiere. At this point in time, the film doesn’t even have a formal trailer out on the market, making it a highly mysterious and intriguing product for comedy super-fans all over the world.

Those who have the money and opportunity to attend TIFF should certainly look forward to catching Friendship on the big screen, as it may be some time before an official-wide release is granted.
