Netflix #1 Blockbuster Brings Whole Family Together
DreamWorks’ Trolls franchise has always had plenty of music, but the third film in the franchise, Trolls Band Together, really leans into the boy band genre. This makes it the perfect family film for parents who grew up in the era of ‘N Sync, Backstreet Boys, and the other big acts of the 90s and 2000s. If you want something to watch with the kids this weekend (or if you’re an adult who just wants a feel-good film), you can stream it now on Netflix, where it currently sits at the #1 spot for movies.
Getting The Band Back Together
Trolls Band Together follows Anna Kendrick’s Poppy and Justin Timberlake’s Branch as Poppy learns Branch used to be in her favorite boy band with his brothers before breaking up. When Branch learns that one of his brothers, Floyd (Troye Sivan), has been kidnapped by a pair of villains, he must team up with his other brothers and Poppy to bring Floyd home safely. If your kids or you loved the first two Trolls movies, then it’s safe to say this one will deliver the same feel-good, musical comedy goods.
‘N Sync Is Back! (Kind Of)
Directed by Walt Dohrn and Tim Heitz with a screenplay by Elizabeth Tippet, Trolls Band Together gives you plenty of catchy tunes, including the first original ‘N Sync song in 22 years titled “Better Place.”
Of course, the film has a laundry list of superstars in the cast, many of whom are also notable musical artists. Aside from Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, the cast includes Zooey Deschanel, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Icona Pop, Anderson Paak, Ron Funches, Kenan Thompson, Kunal Nayyar, Eric Andre, and Kid Cudi, just to name a few.
Timberlake’s former ‘N Sync bandmates Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, and JC Chasez even appear as the boy band Kismet in the film.
A True Franchise Fan-Favorite
Trolls Band Together was well-received, with reviewers noting the film has plenty of laughs, catchy tunes, and eye-catching animation that will make kids happy and that won’t grate on adults. As of this writing, the title has a 63 percent critical score against a much more favorable 92 percent audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Trolls also continues to be a financially successful franchise for DreamWorks Animation, with Band Together bringing in $209 million worldwide at the box office. While DreamWorks certainly has more successful and better franchises, it’s safe to say they won’t be slowing the Trolls train down anytime soon.
Waiting On Another Sequel
Of course, given the success of Trolls Band Together and previous Trolls movies, the franchise is likely going to continue in the near future, though an official sequel hasn’t been announced yet. Star Justin Timberlake has said that there were a total of seven Trolls movies that are supposed to be made, though that will likely depend on the franchise continuing to deliver at the box office. Reportedly, the next sequel looks to reunite the members of One Direction, which will undoubtedly keep the money flowing in for the Trolls franchise.
