Netflix Turning Black Mirror Episode Into Standalone Series
Creating a new story with every episode is challenging for any anthology series. But it’s even more so for Black Mirror, which doesn’t just create something new each season like American Horror Story or Why Women Kill. Instead, they release a new narrative with every episode. Even more impressive is how each episode leaves fans wanting more—something Netflix is all too happy to accommodate with the new spin-off series following “USS Callister.
USS Callister Series
The streaming giant is set to produce a spin-off limited series based on its Emmy-winning episode, “USS Callister, ” in a thrilling development for fans of the acclaimed Netflix series Black Mirror.
The new mini-series, which has been rumored since 2021, will comprise of three episodes and is scheduled to begin production later this year.
Tormenting Through Star Trek
The episode “USS Callister” was released on December 29, 2017, as the opening installment of Black Mirror Season 4.
The narrative follows the chief technology officer (CTO) of a gaming company, portrayed by Jesse Plemons, who concocts a unique form of revenge against colleagues who fail to meet his expectations in the workplace.
The CTO uses a private copy of the company’s multiplayer game, featuring a Star Trek aesthetic, to torment his coworkers.
Not The First Time
This isn’t the first time speculation about a “USS Callister” spin-off has surfaced. Reports in June 2021 indicated that Netflix was in the early stages of developing a spin-off for the Black Mirror episode, but details had been scarce until now.
Black Mirror enthusiasts were recently delighted with the news that the series would be returning for a seventh season on Netflix. Initially hinted at through listings under the project name HAVEN GREEN, the confirmation came when Netflix France accidentally revealed the upcoming season on November 21st.
Toby Haynes is set to direct once again for the new season.
Shooting In 2024
Scheduled to be filmed in the United Kingdom, the Black Mirror spin-off series aims to commence shooting in Spring 2024 and will span ten weeks. Despite the excitement surrounding the project, details about the plot remain tightly under wraps.
The limited series is a collaborative effort between Broke and Bones, the production company established by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, and Pacesetter Productions, Inc., managed by Jessica Rhoades, who joined Black Mirror in its fifth season.
USS Callister Cast Returning
Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly, Cristin Milioti as Nanette Cole, and Jimmi Simpson as Walton are returning to reprise their roles from the ” USS Callister ” episode.
Additionally, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Paul G Raymond, Osy Ikhile, and Billy Magnussen are expected to return or are currently in negotiations for their roles.
First Black Mirror Spin-Off
The USS Callister series will be the first Black Mirror spin-off. The announcement suggests that Netflix sees potential in expanding the universe of this eighty-six-times Emmy-nominated series.
If the spin-off proves successful in terms of viewership and critical acclaim, it could indeed pave the way for more spin-offs in the future.
