Netflix Makes Bid For Kevin Costner Horizon
Could Netflix be the eventual home of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga franchise? World of Reel reported that the streamer has made a bid to acquire the film and potentially help fund the planned third and fourth chapters. This plan would entail releasing the chapters with months between each release and possibly turning them into an episodic miniseries.
Not The Savior Kevin Costner Wanted, But The One He Needs
Netflix’s offer may not be exactly what Kevin Costner wants for his Horizon franchise, but it might also be his best chance to tell his story. Costner is the producer, co-writer, director, and star of this ambitious franchise, which saw the first film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It was eventually released in theaters on June 28, and it only has mixed reviews and $29 million to show for it so far.
The Future Of The Series Is Up In The Air
Earlier reports said that Costner had paused filming on Horizon: Chapter 3 to field funding for the film, and it doesn’t seem especially likely that too many parties are eager to throw money at the project with the recent box office performance.
However, it seems increasingly unlikely that Costner would be able to get the third and fourth chapters of his saga to the big screen after the disappointing box office numbers and reviews. In this case, Netflix’s offer for the Horizon franchise might be the only way forward for the Western saga.
Chapter 2 Has Already Been Filmed
Kevin Costner already knocked out Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 before the first movie hit theaters, and it was scheduled to drop in August of this year. However, New Line Cinema pulled it from the release schedule due to the box office numbers, and now its release date is up and in the air. Presumably, New Line Cinema wouldn’t mind Netflix taking Horizon off its hands, but it seems that the decision is ultimately up to Costner if he wants the future of the franchise to land on a streaming service.
Other Streamers Might Be Interested
If Netflix is willing to fund some of Horizon and give the future of the franchise a chance, it’s certainly possible that other parties might be interested. Knowing that the project has some potential to gain traction on streaming would likely be more promising to potential investors over a continued effort to make this film franchise take off in theaters.
Horizon Is Coming To Video On Demand Very Soon
In short, Netflix’s offer could be just the shot in the arm that Kevin Costner’s Horizon needs if he actually wants to complete the thing. If you’re interested in checking out Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, you can still catch it in theaters and a digital release is likely on the way soon.
Along with Costner, the film stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
