For years Netflix has been the go-to streaming service for people the world over – and it’s easy to see why. The platform offers a wide variety of old and new movies, series, anime, documentaries, and more at an affordable price. There’s just one catch. The company doesn’t release original films or series for purchase on DVD or other digital platforms very often. This type of content is only available exclusively on streaming for Netflix.

On occasion, Netflix does release some of its most popular series on DVD, including Stranger Things, House of Cards, and Orange Is the New Black. But the streaming giant also has good reason to keep its franchises exclusive to the platform. It’s a sure-fire way to attract new customers and make sure old ones keep coming back. But for a lot of folks who enjoy owning a copy of their favorite show or movie, it can be a little annoying. Interestingly, it’s not just viewers who find this unofficial Netflix rule a little frustrating. Mike Flanagan, the filmmaker behind projects like Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep, and The Haunting of Hill House said he’s been trying to convince the streamer to alter its policy regarding physical versions of its popular streaming properties.

When asked about the possibility of Midnight Mass being released outside Netflix on social media, Flanagan said the company still won’t release it in a physical format despite his repeated inquiries. He quipped, “I will keep trying, either until they change their minds or I am dead, whichever comes first.” The fan exchange ended a few more people voiced their dissatisfaction with the company’s decision.

While Midnight Mass may get a physical release eventually, for now, fans will have to stream it on Netflix. Unfortunately, people who don’t have access to the streaming service will be missing out on arguably one of the best shows of 2021. Created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, Midnight Mass begins when a young man returns to his isolated hometown on Crockett Island – hoping to rebuild his life after serving four years in prison for killing someone in a drunk-driving incident. He arrives at the same time as a mysterious, charismatic young priest, who begins to revitalize the town’s flagging faith. However, the community’s existing divisions are soon exacerbated by the priest’s deeds while mysterious events befall the small town.

The Netflix series features Hamish Linklater as Father Paul Hill, the enigmatic new priest at St. Patrick’s Church, who arrives to replace the aging Monsignor Pruitt temporarily. Zach Gilford stars as Riley Flynn, a former venture capitalist who returns the island Crockett after spending four years in jail. And Kate Siegel appears as Erin Greene, a school teacher, and Riley’s childhood sweetheart.

Rounding out the cast of the popular Netflix series are Rahul Kohli as Sheriff Hassan, Kristin Lehman as Annie Flynn, Samantha Sloyan as Bev Keane, Igby Rigney as Warren Flynn, Annarah Cymone as Leeza Scarborough, Annabeth Gish as Dr. Sarah Gunning, Alex Essoe as Mildred Gunning, and Rahul Abburi as Ali Hassan. Matt Biedel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Louis Oliver, and Henry Thomas also star. The Midnight Mass is currently available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
