Netflix AMC Streaming Deal Creates Huge New Audience For Hit Shows

Netflix and AMC have officially reached a deal for Netflix to stream 13 original AMC series on the network for a full year. This news only adds to what has come to be known as the Netflix effect – the power of the streaming giant to bring new audiences and interest to another streaming network, actor, director, or even genre that had previously gone unnoticed or under-appreciated.

From Max To Netflix

AMC Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire

Around this time last year, AMC made a similar deal with Max, albeit a much shorter, much cheaper one. In August of 2023, AMC announced that a handful of their popular shows, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, A Discovery of Witches, and The Walking Dead among them, would be available for streaming on Max for two months. As Max had five times more subscribers than AMC at the time, the deal made sense for AMC to pique the interest of Max’s subscribers. The Netflix AMC deal is dramatically bigger.

Breaking Bad On Netflix

AMC Breaking Bad

This is also not the first time Netflix and AMC have made a streaming deal. Previously, AMC offered Netflix viewers access to popular shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men, which increased the audience for both shows. After all, AMC currently has around 11 million paid subscribers. Netflix has almost 250 million. And the Netflix audience continues to grow by about 10% each year. It’s a no-brainer for a smaller streaming service to tease its content on Netflix in the hopes of getting new paid subscribers.

13 AMC Series Making Their Way To Netflix

AMC Dark Winds

On August 19, Netflix will begin streaming 13 shows, including, but not limited to: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, A Discovery of Witches, Monsieur Spade, Into the Badlands, Kevin Can F**k Himself, Fear the Walking Dead, and Dark Winds, among others.

In January, Netflix will also add two more Walking Dead titles to its services: The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

A Spooky Good Strategy

What is especially savvy about Netflix and AMC choosing this particular time of year to ink this agreement is that it is happening right as spooky season is beginning. People across America are starting to prepare for fall and the buildup to Halloween. We often do this with an onslaught of films and series that get us in the mood to be a little scared.

Theaters begin their slate of horror films in August and September, and new seasons of scary series also tend to debut around this time of year. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was released on Netflix on October 26 of 2018 and even the animated Addams Family was released in theaters on October 11 of 2019. It’s a common trend that makes perfect sense.

Catching Up On The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead franchise is one of the most gruesome scary series streaming today, and that includes all of its spinoffs. And another smart aspect of this Netflix AMC deal is that Netflix will not be streaming any new or current content. So the idea is that Netflix audiences will have a chance to stream and binge several seasons of a show they’ve been meaning to watch or that is recommended to them by Netflix based on their viewership, and then they can subscribe to AMC to catch current content as new seasons come out.

August 19 is your chance to catch up on all those shows you’ve heard so much about. It’s an ideal trial period for a Netflix subscriber. Here’s hoping we see more agreements like this in the future.
