The Netflix Action Crime Series Starring An Oscar Winner

Dropping all eight episodes at once for the post-holiday binge, The Brothers Sun is one of Netflix’s freshest arrivals, hitting the platform on January 4. The series follows a Taiwanese family who have immigrated to Los Angeles, California. Knowing nothing of his family’s life in his home country, Bruce (Sam Song Li) sees himself as nothing more than a California boy, living a mundane but happy life alongside his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh).

Bruce is forced to face some hard truths when his older brother Charles (Justin Chien) arrives in Los Angeles, seeking safety from the rough streets of Taipei, Taiwan. Revealing the truth about their family, Charles tells Bruce that he’s in the United States to ensure the safety of his brother and mom. When more truths unravel, Bruce discovers just how deep his family has been with the criminal underbelly as The Brothers Sun shows the trio sticking tightly together against those who wish them harm.

Serving as the lead creators of The Brothers Sun are Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu. Many will recognize Brad Falchuk’s name from his work alongside his frequent collaborator Ryan Murphy on such projects as American Horror Story, Glee, Scream Queens, Pose, and Nip/Tuck. Meanwhile, the Netflix comedy action drama is Byron Wu’s big break into primetime productions as his previous work has mostly included shorts.Nabbing the star power of Michelle Yeoh was a huge win for The Brothers Sun when the project began its casting process in 2022. From the Golden Globes to the Oscars, there’s not an award show that hasn’t seen Michelle Yeoh’s name on its ballot – with her taking home a large percentage of those honors that she’s been nominated for. Most recently, audiences cheered for Michelle Yeoh and the rest of the incredible cast of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s 2022 action flick, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

While viewers across the multiverse fell in love with Michelle Yeoh for the first time through her performance as mother and business owner, Evelyn, many of us have been huge fans of the performer for decades. Other titles that have seen her bring the fire in both fighting choreography and performances include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, Memories of a Geisha, and Crazy Rich Asians.

And, although The Brothers Sun marks her big comeback to television, Michelle Yeoh is a beloved member of the Star Trek family thanks to her time on Star Trek: Discovery while last year she appeared in Disney+’s American Born Chinese.

Looking beyond her role in The Brothers Sun, it’s a great time to be a fan of Michelle Yeoh as the actress has a slew of other gigs making their way onto screens in the near future. Not only will she be heard in the animated production The Tiger’s Apprentice, but Yeoh will also join the Avatar franchise for the third and fourth installments as well as parts one and two of the film adaptation of the musical Wicked.For The Brothers Sun’s titular pair of siblings, the Netflix production marks a big milestone in both Justin Chien and Sam Song Li’s careers. For Chien, audiences may have previously seen him in last year’s romance drama Sun Moon, while Song Li has held guest appearances on shows including Better Call Saul, Never Have I Ever, and Home Economics.

The Brothers Sun marks the beginning of a brand new year of highly-anticipated content to come from the most revered name in streaming. Audiences can also expect to catch the Millie Bobby Brown-led fantasy action film Damsel, Sofía Vergara’s return to television in Griselda, Season 1 of 3 Body Problem, and Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver.
