Nathan Fillion Can’t Wait To Play DC’s Most Annoying Green Lantern
Nathan Fillion has been perfectly cast as Guy Gardner, the most obnoxious of the Green Lantern Corp, in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Fans are undoubtedly excited about this piece of casting, and it seems like Fillion is just as excited as we are. Fillion talked to Collider and explained how he likes how Gardner is flawed and different from the usual superhero role.
Nathan Fillion As Guy Gardner
Nathan Fillion described the abrasive Green Lantern in his own terms, saying “Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care,” adding, “That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that.”
It definitely seems like Fillion has Gardner’s demeanor pinned down, which should definitely translate to a pitch-perfect performance. In fact, it’s hard to imagine too many people more suited for playing a live-action Guy Gardner.
Guy Gardner’s Personality
Guy Gardner is one of the few humans chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps and he immediately stands out from his fellow superheroes due to his brash and borderline arrogant personality.
It’s definitely going to be an interesting role for Nathan Fillion to play, and Gardner seems like the perfect character for James Gunn’s writing style.
As we’ve seen with Peacemaker, Gunn has a talent for giving depth and nuance to characters who seem obnoxious at first glance.
Bringing The James Gunn Vibe To DC
Of course, making these kinds of characters likable also depends on good casting.
John Cena’s surprisingly multifaceted performance as Peacemaker showed he was the perfect person for that particular acting challenge, and Nathan Fillion seems like he’ll be doing the same for Guy Gardner. Hopefully we can get a meeting between Cena’s Peacemaker and Fillion’s Green Lantern sometime in Gunn’s DCU.
David Corenswet Playing Superman
Great casting is definitely going to be important for Superman when it eventually hits theaters in 2025.
The film is set to kick off James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, so there’s a ton riding on the film. So far, the casting has been extremely promising with David Corenswet playing the titular Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.
Nathan Fillion Already In The Suicide Squad
Funnily enough, this actually won’t be Nathan Fillion’s first role in a James Gunn DC movie, as he previously appeared (briefly) in The Suicide Squad as TDK aka The Detachable Kid.
As you might expect, TDK didn’t last quite as long as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern likely will. Outside of 2025’s Superman, we likely will definitely see Guy Gardner popping up in other DCU projects.
Lanterns Coming As Well
Of course, the most likely place we can expect to see Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner again is in the HBO series Lanterns, which focuses on Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Lanterns is set to be a detective story set on Earth, with the mystery supposedly leading into a main storyline for the DCU, according to Peter Safran.
While Hal Jordan and John Stewart are the main characters of the series, there’s no reason other Lanterns like Gardner couldn’t make an appearance.
For the time being, Lanterns doesn’t have a release date, so we’ll have to wait a while to find out. In the meantime, we can look forward to Nathan Fillion’s debut as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in Superman. Superman is set to hit theaters in 2025.
