Natasha Lyonne is currently riding high on critical praise for her comedy-mystery series Poker Face, and she is sporting the outfits to match. In a recent Instagram post from InStyle, the Netflix star shows off 1970s-style black velvet high-waisted trousers and a form-fitting black vest with no shirt beneath. The outfit was styled by Cristina Ehrlich and is paired with a bright teal medallion and Natasha Lyonne’s own famously crimson hair.

The caption to InStyle’s post about Natasha Lyonne references her new show Poker Face, which was created by Knives Out filmmaker Rian Johnson (who also directed the first two episodes), and her character as “a human lie detector on the run from a bad guy casino owner.” The post is no doubt in conjunction with a recent feature in InStyle Magazine in which Natasha Lyonne described influences on her character Charlie Cale as varied as Elliot Gould’s low-rent version of iconic private detective Philip Marlowe and Jeff Bridges’ eternally confused stoner in The Big Lebowski.

This makes sense a great deal for Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson’s series, which takes a Columbo-style narrative to each episode. In the long-running television series starring the late Peter Falk (a personal friend of Lyonne’s), audiences would see the perpetrators of a crime committing the deed and then successfully cover it up, only for the titular detective to bumble in and almost inadvertently solve the mystery. The series lasted for more than 10 seasons and has become a cultural touchstone.

In addition to Natasha Lyonne, Poker Face stars an enormous cast of notable actors, many of whom only appear for a single episode of Charlie Cale’s journey across America. The show has been announced to feature Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Benjamin Bratt, Chloe Sevigny, Academy Award-nominated Hong Chau, Nick Nolte, Tim Blake Nelson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. If nothing else, it shows that Rian Johnson’s fondness for a ridiculously stacked ensemble cast shows no sign of fading.

Natasha Lyonne showed up in a brief cameo in Rian Johnson’s most recent feature film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (along with Hugh Grant, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, among many others). The film was a critical smash, with Daniel Craig’s return as mannered, heavily-accented gentleman detective Benoit Blanc earning him some of the best reviews of his career. For his part, Johnson apparently hated that he was forced to add the Knives Out subtitle to the movie, but maybe he won’t have to next time

There is no telling whether Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale and Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc will cross over and have a meeting of detective minds, but knowing Rian Johnson, there is a strong possibility. Currently, Poker Face holds an astonishing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, which hopefully bodes well for a second season of the Peacock series. If it gives Natasha Lyonne more opportunity to get up in outfits like that, we will certainly welcome it.
