Fresh from her collaboration with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Love and Thunder, Natalie Portman has her sights set on working on a team-up with a different Marvel Hero. Speaking to Variety, Natalie Portman says she would like to see her character The Mighty Thor team up with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel on-screen.
Variety caught up with Natalie Portman on the red carpet for the Thor: Love and Thunder world premiere in Hollywood, California at the El Capitan Theatre on June 23, ahead of the film’s widespread cinema release on July 8. Portman was asked by Variety’s red-carpet reporter who she would lie to work with next in the MCU next following Thor: Love and Thunder. After a few moments of pondering the question and heaping praise on her Thor co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, Portman professed her love for Captain Marvel and its star Brie Larson, citing Larson as a “dear friend” and that working with her “would be a fun one.” The full clip with Portman can be seen below.
The fate of Natalie Portman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Thor: Love and Thunder is understandably being kept under wraps. However, if the MCU were to mirror its comic book source material, fans could potentially see a character struggling with cancer on July 8. As written by ScreenRant, when Jane Foster aka The Mighty Thor was introduced as the new wielder of Mjolnir, her character was battling cancer. To compound fans’ fears that Thor: Love and Thunder will be Natalie Portman’s one and only appearance as The Mighty Thor, both director Taika Waititi and Portman herself have been deliberately coy when asked about the character’s future.
Should Natalie Portman make it through Thor: Love and Thunder alive and healthy, a Captain Marvel team-up would be a great way to feature The Mighty Thor character in future MCU projects. First off, both The Mighty Thor and Captain Marvel are characters that hail from the cosmic-themed entries to the MCU, so it would make sense that they would cross paths. Also, given that Captain Marvel was the first female led MCU film and that The Mighty Thor sees a classic Marvel character in Thor reimagined as a female hero, it would be a fitting tribute to strong female characters for the two to team up on the big or small screen (with the latter being a big possibility thanks to Disney+).
Whilst the cinematic future of The Mighty Thor remains up in the air, Marvel fans will be able to get a further experience of the Natalie Portman character in the world of video games. The Mighty Thor will be part of a free DLC pack Marvel’s Avengers on June 28, meaning that gamers will be able to wield the mighty Mjolnir as The Mighty Thor days before seeing Natalie Portman doing the same in cinemas on July 8.
Thor: Love and Thunder will reveal all regarding Natalie Portman’s future in the MCU, be it a happy ending or a fateful demise. However, given Marvel’s ability to continue a character’s story post-death (see Loki for proof), perhaps Natalie Portman will return as The Mighty Thor again regardless, opening the door for a Captain Marvel team-up. Odds are the end credits of Thor: Love and Thunder will help fans piece the puzzle together.
