Mr. And Mrs. Smith Season 2 Is Happening Without Series Stars

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 introduced us to the star duo, portraying two spies who agree to an arranged marriage. It’s a reimagining of the 2005 movie of the same name, but with a twist—it takes the Hollywood formula used in the original and twists it inside out, putting high-octane action in the backseat while focusing on the two spies as they navigate their relationship as an undercover married couple.

Now, it does raise the question of how Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 can air without featuring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the eponymous couple.

The reasons behind Glover and Erskine’s absence from the series remain a mystery for the time being, as Amazon declined to comment on their return—thus, it’s best to treat this information as a rumor for the time being.

It’s worth noting that Glover is still attached to the project as a co-creator and executive producer of the series along with Franchesca Sloane, who will also come back for Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 as the series’ showrunner. She previously added that she would enjoy making more of the series, as she believes that there’s a lot more story to tell.

The announcement regarding Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 came directly from Amazon, with Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, announcing the series for Prime Video customers. Glover, aka Childish Gambino, recently announced his New World Tour, which will start in August 2024 and extend into 2025, which could potentially explain his absence from the upcoming season of the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series.

With Glover and Erskine absent from Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2, it’s entirely possible for the series to adopt an anthology format and introduce a new couple taking on the names of Jane and John Smith every season, which isn’t a bad idea. However, considering that no one confirmed that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine wouldn’t appear in the upcoming season, it’s entirely possible for the show to pick up right where it left off—with three gun flashes seen from the window, which left us wondering whether there’s anyone left.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 still doesn’t have a release date, so we don’t really know when to expect the series’ arrival to streaming, nor whether it will feature its original cast of characters.
