Netflix is the only place you can watch the year's most streamed movie: A Madea Homecoming.

If viewers wanted to see this year’s #1 streaming title, it could only be viewed in one place. The most streamed movie was Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming, pulling in 19% of respondents in a survey by OnePoll. It was followed closely by another Netflix exclusive, the Enola Holmes sequel starring Millie Bobby Brown.
Tyler Perry has made a total of 12 Madea movies, including this year’s Netflix release. A Madea Homecoming tells another story about the family matriarch as her great-grandson Tim is about to graduate from college and friends and relatives gather to celebrate. The Madea character was supposed to be retired with the release of 2019’s A Madea Family Funeral, but was revived for the Netflix project and has now proven the character’s enduring popularity.
The Madea universe has always been about family, from the first play featuring the character, I Can Do Bad All by Myself. Tyler Perry credits his mother and aunt for inspiring the character and has played her in every film, from 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman to this year’s A Madea Homecoming. The original 1999 play was adapted into a movie of the same name in 2009, and both stage and screen also share Madea’s Family Reunion, Madea Goes to Jail, and A Madea Christmas.
A Madea Homecoming is based on the stage play A Madea Farewell, which was supposed to be Madea’s exit from the stage. The new movie crosses over with another family that shares Madea’s last name, Mrs. Brown’s Boys, an Irish sitcom starring Brendan O’Carroll as the matriarch of her own comedically dysfunctional family. As the celebration wears on, the two families interact in ways that show they have more in common than they have differences.
Audiences clearly enjoyed the movie, despite a middling rating from Rotten Tomatoes, since they were willing to rate A Madea Homecoming so highly on the survey. The movie was released on Netflix on February 25, 2022, and has only been shown on the streaming giant, which means that although the movie was limited to a narrow channel, a lot of people still made a point of subscribing and watching it. Furthermore, they rated it the most-watched of streaming-only movies for 2022.
Tyler Perry’s Netflix film is the most-watched streaming-only release of 2022. Other movies that placed in the top 10 aside from A Madea Christmas and Enola Holmes 2 included the Daniel Radcliffe mockumentary biopic Weird Al: The Yankovic Story, the witchy Disney sequel Hocus Pocus 2, and Predator universe prequel Prey. Hulu’s science fiction period piece about Native Americans being hunted by the alien trophy hunter rounded out the top 10 at 13%.
As a Netflix production that earned the title of 2022’s most streamed, A Madea Homecoming is not likely to disappear soon, and the rate at which the survey respondents said they have watched it hints at a larger audience that also may have seen it. It is a relatively new movie and there is plenty of time for it to build an even bigger audience as word-of-mouth spreads about it. Check it out on Netflix and see why it became the most-watched streaming movie of 2022.
