Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Fandoms are admittedly suckers for crossovers. If followers can see some of their favorite characters come together on a multiverse-like timeline, it usually means big viewership numbers for the network or studio. While rumors have been swirling that a Mortal Kombat Vs. DC showdown would eventually see the light of day, and according to writer Jeremy Adams, this won’t be the case after all.

Jeremy Adams, the writer for multiple Mortal Kombat and DC animated movies, pitched a Mortal Kombat vs. DC movie to Warner Bros. but was turned down.

During an interview with ComicBook, Jeremy Adams shared that while the Mortal Kombat Vs. DC idea was pitched to Warner Bros., but the studio ultimately shot it down. With a background in penning animated titles including Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms,  Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, and Justice League: Warworld, Adams would’ve been the obvious choice to make the dreams of fans of both franchises come to life.

While chatting with ComicBook, Adams warned audiences to “lower your expectations” surrounding the future of the Mortal Kombat Vs. DC project, as he’s unsure if the studios “have any plans to do more.” Revealing that the pitch was, in fact, made to Warner Bros., Adams went on to say that it was “rebuffed,” with the studio having no interest in the project.

The original idea for a scripted animated film for a crossover featuring Mortal Kombat Vs. DC stems from joint games of yesteryear – particularly the 2008 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Further shooting down any hope that a Mortal Kombat Vs. DC production would be on the way. Adams said that while he was still holding out “hope,” it just might not be something that the studios are “ever going to do anymore.”

With such a staggering background in bringing the animated universes of both franchises to life, Adams says that should Warner Bros. change its minds, he hopes that he receives a “call.” Reassuring fans that should the folks at the top be in, he would absolutely attach his name to the project, Adams added, “I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.”

The roster in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

The original idea for a scripted animated film for a crossover featuring Mortal Kombat Vs. DC stems from joint games of yesteryear – particularly the 2008 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The game would allow players to use special moves like Batman’s Sneaky Batarang or The Joker’s Bombs Away against the likes of Scorpion’s Spear and Sonya’s Ring of Fire. Despite not having quite the same brutal-edged Fatalities that the Mortal Kombat universe was known for, it was still an enjoyable game for fans to dig in on.

For now, the closest fans can get to Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is the original game, and Injustice 2.

While Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe may be one of the most legendary crossover games out there, but that’s not to say that other franchises haven’t branched out to give players the option to see a multitude of characters in other universes. Such can be said for the Super Smash Brothers games, which have, along with featuring familiar faces from Super Mario Bros., have also included characters from Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Metal Gear Solid, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more.

For now, it seems as though the animated faceoff between the Mortal Kombat and DC characters will only live on in the PlayStation game. Maybe Warner Bros. doesn’t realize it, or perhaps they simply have too much on their slate, but it’s easy to say that a Mortal Kombat Vs. DC animated feature would be a massive money-maker for the studio. But we’ll never say never!
