Mortal Kombat 2 First Look Promises Fan-Favorite Return
The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat is in the works, and the film’s producer, Todd Garner, just teased the return of Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 via X (formerly Twitter).
Namely, Garner teased the return of a fan-favorite character by posting an image of a kunai rope dart, or, in this case, a kunai chain dart seemingly bathed in blood.
A Mortal Kombat 2 Teaser
This is good news for Mortal Kombat fans. The production of Mortal Kombat 2 was previously paused due to the movie industry strikes.
But now that the main issues have been resolved, the sequel’s filming has continued, and Todd Garner isn’t shy about sharing teasers.
His recent post on X appears to be a snapshot on a monitor of recorded footage for the upcoming film, and while the frame does have much going on, it does reveal a chained kunai weapon similar to the one used by Scorpion. And judging by the color of it, used it was.
Multiple Characters Returning?
This shot hits Scorpion’s return in Mortal Kombat 2, but it could also signal the return of Sub-Zero and Quan Chi, who played an important part in eliminating Scorpion’s clan.
What’s really in store for us remains to be seen, but it’s important to note that this might be just a tease, and nothing might come of it.
From what we know, Scorpion returned to Hell after dispatching Sub-Zero in the original movie. On top of that, Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrayed Scorpion so beautifully, has previously suggested that Scorpion might not return in Mortal Kombat 2.
Best Live-Action Scorpion?
So, while the newly shared footage image does look promising—and we’d like to see Sanada as Scorpion once again, it isn’t indicative of whether Scorpion makes an appearance or just how much screen time the character will have.
However, Sanada also expressed his desire to be included in Mortal Kombat 2, and that he hopes that, despite the lack of official confirmation at the time, he’ll get another chance to say the iconic “Get over here!” line.
And we hope so, too because Sanada might be the best live-action Scorpion we got so far.
Fixing The Scorpion Mistakes
We’re not saying that Chris Casamassa from the 1995’s Mortal Kombat did a bad job; quite the contrary. However, the original movie relied on games to provide Scorpion with a backstory, so the character received reduced screen time and narrative importance in the original Mortal Kombat.
In fact, if we neglect his 20-second introduction at the beginning of the movie, Scorpion receives a single fight scene that relies more on special effects than combat choreography.
That mistake was fixed in the 2021 movie, and we hope to see Sanada’s Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 2.
Other Mortal Kombat 2 Additions?
It’s also important to note that Hiroyuki Sanada has been listed among the cast for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 as Hanzo Hasashi on IMDb Plus, several other cast members are returning to reprise their roles.
New actors are joining the cast, like Karl Urban. However, IMDb listings aren’t set in stone, and they’re often wrong, so the kunai chain dart image post is the closest thing we got to an official confirmation regarding Scorpion’s return in Mortal Kombat 2.
