Mononoke Anime Movie Revealed In New Video
The last few years seem to be a golden age for reboots and revivals of older or abandoned anime, with Skip and Loafer brought back to life in 2023 and Spice and Wolf getting a complete reboot in 2024. As of late July 2024, Mononoke can be added to the list of revivals, with a movie trilogy to continue this amazing and distinctive anime. Already the first movie is airing in Japan, but international fans will have to settle with the trailer for now until it is released internationally.
The original Mononoke anime ended in 2007 after only airing 12 episodes. Due to its interesting plot and completely unique art style, the story was well received. On My Anime List, the series has an average score of 8.42 and a popularity ranking of 727.
The Mononoke series focuses on Kusuriuri (Takahiro Sakurai), also known as the medicine seller. He travels across feudal Japan, hunting down and killing evil spirits. But killing it isn’t so easy, as he must first learn its Form, its Truth, and its Reason.

When the medicine seller ends up at an inn, he meets a pregnant woman. She ends up in the only available room to rest, not realizing that the room is filled with monsters. The medicine seller helps her, focused on removing all of the monsters before they can hurt anyone else.
Though many people loved the first season, there was no hope the series would continue at least not until recently, when the Mononoke movie was announced. Called Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa, the movie is meant to continue the story of the medicine seller.
As of this moment, the Mononoke movie is the first anime the team has produced, so it will be interesting to see how these teams work together to create a film.
Based on the trailers, the film looks impressive. It manages to keep a very similar art style to the original series, though not the exact same. This is because the studio working on the movie, EOTA, has some of the team from Twin Engine Studio, who was the team behind the original Mononoke series.
In addition to staff from Twin Engine, EOTA also has members of Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Lay-duce, Peakys, daisy, FILMONY, and team Yamahitsuji. The companies worked together to create a team so that they could pool their resources. As of this moment, the Mononoke movie is the first anime the team has produced, so it will be interesting to see how these teams work together to create a film.
As of July 26, 2024, the Mononoke movie premiered in Japanese theaters.
Though the team behind the movie is the same for both the Mononoke series and the movie, the main voice actor will be different. Instead of Takahiro Sakurai (Berserk: The Golden Age Arc) as the voice actor for Kusuriuri, he will be played by Hiroshi Kamiya (Durarara!!) in the movie.
It shouldn’t take long to see how it does. As of July 26, 2024, the Mononoke movie premiered in Japanese theaters. However, there hasn’t been any information yet on when the film will be released in other countries.
This won’t be the only taste of Mononoke fans get. Already, the continuation is set to be a trilogy, according to Anime News Network. The second film will come out on March 14, 2025. The third movie doesn’t have a release date as of yet.
