Exclusive: Mon Mothma Series In Development, Timeline Revealed
Mon Mothma will get her own starring series, set during the events of the original Star Wars trilogy.
The fan-favorite Star Wars character Mon Montha will star in her own spin-off series, set during the events of the original trilogy. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Mon Mothma series will cover some part of the time period between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi and presumably lead up to her role in the Disney+ series Andor. This will be the first starring vehicle for the character, whose initial role in the franchise was a single scene in Return of the Jedi but has become much, much more.
The Mon Mothma series is still currently in development, so there are few details available. A few assumptions can be safely made, including that most likely, Genevieve O’Reilly will continue to play the character, as she has in all live-action Star Wars projects since 2016. O’Reilly is currently listed on IMDb as appearing as Mon Mothma in 10 episodes of the Andor series, making her a primary supporting character for at least the first season. We can also probably guess that her own series will give us some more backstory as to how she got to where she is in the post-Order 66 galaxy.
Mon Mothma first appeared in one scene in Return of the Jedi (first portrayed by Caroline Blakiston), delivering a whole bunch of exposition about how the second Death Star near Endor would be hosting Emperor Palpatine himself and informing everyone present how many Bothans died to get that information. For the record, it was many. While Mon Mothma had not appeared in the series up till that point, it was implied that she was, if not the leader of the Rebel Alliance, at least one of its most important figures.
As with many characters with brief appearances in the original trilogy, Mon Mothma intrigued fans, who wanted to know more about this regal, quiet-voiced Rebel commander. George Lucas would originally cast Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma for a scene in Revenge of the Sith that was ultimately deleted, in which she attends a secret meeting with Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) and Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) that serves as the very beginnings of the Rebel Alliance.
Deep-cut Star Wars fans (and are there any other kind) were thus surprised and overjoyed to see Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma return to the series in Rogue One, in which she and Bail Organa (Smits again) convince Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) to undertake a secret mission alongside Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).
Mon Mothma’s backstory has also been filled out significantly more in The Clone Wars animated series, in which she was voiced by Kath Soucie. Despite being a one-scene wonder at first, Mon Mothma has steadily grown to be an important part of the Star Wars franchise, so it makes sense that Disney would finally look into developing her own series.
It can be expected that the Mon Mothma series will stream on Disney+, similar to Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tales of the Jedi, and the many other series in development or production. Finally, Mon Mothma may get her own story.
