Minions 3 Cannot Be Stopped

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

Despite the adorable crankiness of mad scientist Gru, everyone immediately knew that the real stars of Despicable Me were the Minions, his army of hapless yellow henchmen. These little guys eventually began headlining their own franchise, and the first two Minions films became smash hits. Now, it looks like these cutesy critters are coming back: Illumination and Universal have confirmed that Minions 3 will be hitting theaters June 30, 2027.

A Long Wait

While that may seem like a long time to wait for more Minion mayhem, fans of this franchise have plenty to look forward to. The screenplay is being written by Brian Lynch, the same writer whose screwball sense of comedy made his screenplays for Minions and The Secret Life of Pets so captivating.

Minions 3 is going to be directed by Pierre Coffin, which should help franchise fans breathe a bit easier…after all, he directed the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions. He’s also served as the voice of these manic mascots from the very beginning.

Already Poised For Success

If that’s not reassuring enough, Minions 3 is also going to be produced by Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan. Meledandri is the CEO and founder of Illumination, and Ryan is one of the animation giant’s most trusted executive producers. Speaking of which, both of them previously produced The Super Mario Bros. Movie, meaning that these little yellow guys have some big shoes to fill (though perhaps not as big as that Goomba shoe from Super Mario Bros. 3).

The Unstoppable Franchise

It’s not hard to see why Minions 3 has gotten the green light as Despicable Me 4 managed to earn over $200 million in only 10 days and retains its number-one spot at the box office. While you could say it’s like comparing apples and oranges (or perhaps Minions and Vultures), it’s notable that the fourth film in this animated franchise has earned more ($211.1 million) than Spider-Man: Homecoming earned ($207.2 million) in the same time period. And it’s even more impressive that the latest Gru film has pulled in so much money during summer when highly-anticipated bid-budget films Furiosa crashed and burned.

Despicable Me Movies Have Been Nominated For Oscars

Obviously, the stars of Minions 3 have proven to be a reliable box office draw and have become a pop culture sensation in their own right. Illumination has previously made bold statements about the Minions being the defining animation icons of a generation, but it’s tough to scoff at this claim given how much critical and commercial acclaim they have received.

Remember, love or hate them, Despicable Me 2 and 3 both received Oscar nominations, and each earned over a billion dollars at the box office, putting them in the same league as the best films of the MCU.

Keep Practicing Your Minion Voice

Right now, Despicable Me 4 continues to dominate the box office, and it’s well on its way to becoming one of this summer’s biggest hits. For fans of this long-running franchise, it’s going to be a long wait until Minions 3 hits theaters on June 30, 2027. Fortunately, those fans can spend those long years of waiting by watching previous films and working on their best Minion voices (admit it, you’ve all practiced talking like these pint-sized weirdos).
