Actress Mila Kunis is set to star in an upcoming mystery-thriller for Netflix called Luckiest Girl Alive. The film centers on a woman named Ani FaNelli, whose perfect life in New York is threatened when a true-crime director asks her to tell the story of when she was viciously attacked during her teenage years. FaNelli’s decision to reveal what happened to her comes at a price, as the truth behind her attack may change how her family and closest friends perceive her. Netflix released the first trailer for the mystery thriller on Thursday. The story is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name written by author Jessica Knoll. Following the novel’s release in 2016, Knoll revealed that much like the main character, she was raped as a teen. In addition to writing the source material, Knoll wrote the film’s screenplay and will serve as an executive producer. The film is directed by The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Mike Barker.

Mila Kunis serves as producer for the project. The actress is also set to appear in the upcoming That 70s Show spinoff series, That 90s Show. She will reprise her role of Jackie Burkart, who she played throughout the show’s run on television. That 70s Show was one of the first significant film/TV projects the actress was featured in. After landing the role of Jackie, she replaced Lacey Chabert as the character Meg Griffin in the animated sitcom Family Guy. She would later land numerous film roles, specifically in comedy. Kunis gained attention from award voters for her performance in the 2010 psychological drama Black Swan, in which she starred opposite Natalie Portman. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky stated in interviews that he cast Kunis in the film after seeing her performance in the 2008 comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Her work in Black Swan earned the actress the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actress in 2010.

Outside of her work in the film industry, Mila Kunis has been making headlines recently for supporting Ukraine during the ongoing conflict with Russia. Along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, Kunis pledged to match up to $3 million in aid to support Ukraine refugees. The couple announced their support for the refugees on social media. In 2022, the couple started a GoFundMe page to help two companies that were aiding the refugees fleeing the country during the ongoing conflict. As of March 2022, the couple exceeded their initial $30 million goal. In addition to helping out Ukraine refugees, Kunis has provided aid during the COVID-19 pandemic through her official wine, Quarantine Wine. Time Magazine included the actress on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.

Luckiest Girl Alive has often been compared to author Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel Gone Girl. The novel was adapted for the screen in 2014 and helped actress Rosamund Pike earn multiple award nominations and wins. If Luckiest Girl Alive can have the same success as Gone Girl, it could lead to Mila Kunis getting more award attention next year.
