Michelle Yeoh Starring In Star Trek: Section 31 Movie, It’s Official
Paramount confirms Michelle Yeoh is starring in the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31; but rather than a series, the story will arrive in a "special movie event."
After years of precious few updates, Michelle Yeoh is finally confirmed to be leading the long-awaited Star Trek: Section 31. According to a report from Variety, rather than a series, which was the original plan, Section 31 will be a movie streaming on Paramount+. Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou which she originated in the inaugural season of Star Trek: Discovery.
The official logline for Star Trek: Section 31 says Michelle Yeoh’s character “joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Like most loglines, it doesn’t reveal many details about the plot, but considering where and — more importantly, when — we last saw Emperor Philippa Georgiou, its wording could actually reveal quite a bit.
The first character Michelle Yeoh plays in Discovery, the prime universe’s Captain Philippa Georgiou, dies early in the series. Yeoh reappears in the second half of the first season as the Terran Empire’s ruthless dictator: the Mirror Universe version of her first character. Unwilling to let go of this other Georgiou, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) brings the emperor back to the prime universe against her will.
In Discovery Season 2, Georgiou joins the clandestine Section 31, and she’s with the crew of the titular ship when they time travel to the 32nd century in Season 3. At the end of the two-parter “Terra Firma,” a being calling himself Carl (Paul Guilfoyle) sends Michelle Yeoh’s character through a portal known as the Guardian of Forever to a place — and a time — that isn’t revealed.
The assumption was that Michelle Yeoh’s character was sent back to the time from whence she came, but the wording of the logline makes this unclear. It says, she “joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets.” Assuming the “secret division” is Section 31, it seems a little interesting the logline refers to her joining the organization, since she was already a member. It could suggest that the Guardian of Forever sent her a completely different era.
The fact that the logline also says Michelle Yeoh’s character “faces the sins of her past,” could also be a hint that part of her spinoff will take place in the Mirror Universe. After all, that’s exactly where “the sins of her past” were committed.
Regardless, the news that Michelle Yeoh is confirmed to be starring in Star Trek: Section 31 is wonderful news considering that both the lack of updates from the project and the actress’ much higher profile put its future in doubt.
