Michelle Yeoh recently described how Star Trek Section 31 will bring something completely different to the iconic and timeless franchise

Star Trek, for better or worse, continues to build out its offerings in such a way that is actually keeping it relatively in line with some of the other major franchises out there. It’s a testament to the brand’s staying power over the many decades that it would seem to only be in growth mode now. That’s meant movie and series announcements along the way with projects at varying points in the production timeline. One of those is the planned Section 31 spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery with Michelle Yeoh in the lead role. Though this series has been on the table for some time, details around the show remain on the lighter side at this point. But recently Yeoh was able to give at least a little insight on what we could be in for when it finally hits the small screen.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly (via Trek Movie), Michelle Yeoh discussed, in part, plans for Section 31 and how the series could begin to shape. Considering how long it’s been since the show was first announced, fans are right to wonder what, if anything, is happening along these lines. From this perspective, Yeoh was able to shine some light on what the plan looks like and what the general tone of the series could be. This was back in February when Yeoh was going some press for her critically acclaimed movie Everything, Everywhere All At Once. Michelle Yeoh spoke about Section 31 saying:
“Section 31 is that (Star Trek) universe but different. It’s like Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy in space.”
This is an interesting take from Michell Yeoh on the plan for the series, especially considering what we know about some of the other shows going in the Star Trek universe of Paramount+ offerings right now. I don’t think anyone would describe recent attempts at stories and series within the franchise along these lines meaning the discussions and pre-production plans for Section 31 are definitely taking on something of a different tone. And considering this planned and proposed series is a spin-off of Discovery, it would seem to make it incredibly divergent from that program.
But seeing as how Section 31, as an organization and a group, is a covert outfit, carrying out missions a bit different than the normal Star Trek fare, it makes sense on a high level for the creators to think about a series in this fashion. From this respect, here’s to hoping that Michelle Yeoh’s description lines up with the comparisons. The franchise could use this type of injection.
Michelle Yeoh was first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery as Philippa Georgiou the captain of the USS Shenzhou. But she didn’t last long in that iteration, getting killed off in the first episode. But Yeoh’s Georgiou would return later as her Mirror Universe counterpart, a much more violent and powerful version of the character. It was this Georgiou who is going to be the lead in Section 31 if it ever happens.
The original plans were for the series to already be in production, but that clearly isn’t the case. The other Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds is set to premiere on May 5th. We are still waiting for when we will officially see Michelle Yeoh in Section 31. We are still probably a couple of years out.
