Michael Keaton has been around Hollywood for generations playing a number of iconic roles, and the actor isn’t slowing things down as he gets older. Keaton has been all over the rumor mill of late with news that he’ll be returning as a couple of different iconic characters he played in the past. Now we have even more news for the actor reprising another beloved character, as insider Daniel Richtman has posted a rumor that Michael Keaton will be returning for not just one, but two Beetlejuice sequels.
This is huge news for Michael Keaton, who originally played Beetlejuice all the way back in 1988. Now, more than three decades later, we are finally getting a follow-up story about the displaced anarchist poltergeist who vexed the Maitland family during their own ghostly struggles. There had been swirling rumors of a possible sequel for some time, though it’s gone through a number of starts and stops over the last year. Now, we are getting close to the official word that Keaton is on board and Tim Burton’s story will continue in some fashion.
The dark comedy Beetlejuice was a surprise hit at the box office, earning $74 million on a $15 million budget, with Michael Keaton’s unhinged role the central piece of the film’s success. Michael Keaton is amazing in the role of a self-serving ghoul who is trying to escape death while also haunting. It was a hit with critics as well, sitting at 85% on the Tomatometer and even won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.
This news also comes on the heels of a number of other big Michael Keaton rumors of late. The biggest and most surprising piece was that he might return to the cowl and cape, playing Batman in a Batman Beyond live-action series. But that’s not all. It looks very much like he’s poised for another extended run as the character in the DC Universe, playing an older version of Bruce Wayne in Robert Pattison’s upcoming Batman universe.
This is complete, late 1980’s Michael Keaton throwback mode, considering he first played Batman at the end of that decade. That movie, which Tim Burton also directed, set the early standard for darkly-toned comic book movies.
Of course, Michael Keaton is also set to reprise his role as Vulture in the upcoming third Spider-Man film and in Morbius. Last we saw that character, he was sitting in jail following the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton’s Vulture, if anything, was one of the more sympathetic villains we’ve seen in comic book movies so far, struggling to raise a family while also selling futuristic arms to bad guys.
Getting more Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice is awesome news and it stands to reason there are plenty of hilarious stories to tell about what the demon’s been up to in the afterlife for all these years. No official word we are looking at for the sequels, but considering this year has been full of rumors about the flick, it appears we’re only picking up steam for a return.
