Michael Caine Retiring From Acting
After a long and historic career that holds nearly 200 screen acting credits dating back nearly a century, Michael Caine has announced plans to retire from acting. According to a recent write-up from The Hollywood Reporter, the Tenet actor plans to end his career after finishing production on the upcoming film The Great Escaper. The Oscar-winning performer stars in the film alongside the late Glenda Jackson, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
Legendary British actor Michael Caine is, at the age of 90, retiring from acting.
While sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Caine joked that he is essentially already in retirement, as he has already wrapped filming on The Great Escaper and currently has no plans to appear in any other roles. The 90-year-old English actor is still set to appear in the upcoming sequel film Now You See Me 3, according to IMDb, but it remains unclear what capacity his role will be in the film.
Caine’s retirement announcement has many fans of the franchise assuming his appearance in the film will be served entirely through flashback and deleted scene footage shot for the previous two films in the franchise, which premiered in 2013 and 2016, respectively.
Of course, the plot of Now You See Me 3 has been kept tightly under wraps, with most of the main cast from the previous films not even confirmed to star yet. This is in addition to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which threaten to hold up any film production for the foreseeable future, until the executives at the AMPTP agree to return to the negotiating table to offer a fair deal to wage workers and union reps across the industry. For now, all signs point to The Great Escaper as Michael Caine’s final film in his nearly century-long acting career.
Michael Caine has won a number of awards for his on-screen work, including two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA.
Michael Caine got his acting start in his mid-twenties with a number of uncredited appearances in British made-for-TV films before breaking onto the scene with massive hits such as 1964’s Zulu, 1966’s Alfie, and 1969’s The Italian Job. Caine made history in cinema by utilizing his cockney accent to portray a number of working-class heroes, rather than the prim and proper English accents that actors from the region were known to display at that time. Since then, Caine has been an A-list star, appearing in some of the greatest films of both the 20th and 21st centuries.
Michael Caine may still appear in Now You See Me 3, but it could be through deleted scenes from the first two movies.
Michael Caine has won a number of awards for his on-screen work, including two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA. Caine was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the year 2000 for his lasting contribution to the arts, providing him with the prefix of Sir in all formal addresses. Despite his career spanning so many decades, this is not the first time rumors surrounding the actor’s departure from the film have made the rounds.
After not working for some time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was speculated that Michael Caine had planned to retire back in 2021. Of course, Caine would go on to appear in a number of films since then, including Twist, Best Sellers, Medieval, and the upcoming The Great Escaper. Regardless of Caine’s plans for the future, the actor is an international icon who has made a significant mark on the world.
