The John Wick cinematic universe is expanding. The upcoming John Wick spinoff series won’t include Keanu Reeves, but will feature Colin Woodell and Mel Gibson at the heart of a story about The Continential, the hotel that serves as a safe haven for the dangerous criminals of the world. The Continental takes place in the 1970s. It will be a short venture on television, just a three-night event premiering on Starz. After a while without hearing much, the new series now has a major update with five new cast members, all of them previously appearing on hit TV shows.
Mark Mushashi (Fear The Walking Dead) and Marina Mazepa (Malignant) will be playing two High Table assassins who go by the names Hansel and Gretel. The next two newly announced cast members are Ray McKinnon (Rectify) and Adam Shapiro (Never Have I Ever). Not much was released about their characters except that they go by Jenkins and Lemmy, which suggests that they are also criminals staying at the hotel. Joining Mel Gibson and the four new cast members is Katie McGrath (Supergirl) who is playing The Adjudicator. This is a role that John Wick fans know something of. In the third installment, The Adjudicator is played by Asia Kate Dillon and is the main villain of the movie.
The Adjudicator is an important role in the John Wick movies and a great way to further tie Mel Gibson’s new prequel series into the cinematic universe. There won’t be a lot of characters from the movies in the series, since it takes place 40 years prior, but since The Adjudicator is just a title, they can use the series to explore what that title means while also further developing the idea of The Adjudicator. The title belongs to an agent of The High Table. Now, we’ll be seeing Supergirl’s Katie McGrath have her turn as a character holding the title.
Mel Gibson will be playing a character named Cormac. Not much is known at this time about Cormac, though many are assuming he will be an antagonist for the new series. Perhaps he’ll be working with the new Adjudicator? For how often his name is brought up in association with the new series, it’s still unknown how major his role will actually be. Since Mel Gibson has had such a high-profile career, it’s possible that The Continental will have him playing a minor character, despite how much attention Gibson is getting since his casting was announced. The main character for the new John Wick spinoff series is Winston Scott. He was played by Ian McShane in the John Wick movies, but his younger self will be played by Colin Woodell in The Continental.
The Continental will serve as an origin story for Winston Scott, the hotel as fans come to know it in the John Wick movies, and as a way to further expand the John Wick universe. It’s expected to release in the first half of 2022, but no official release date has been announced. That would have put it close to the release of John Wick 4, starring Keanu Reeves, but unfortunately, the fourth movie was delayed (again) and won’t release until March 24, 2023.
