Due to the ongoing pandemic, there have been a good number of movies that have been delayed due to a myriad of issues. Now it seems that we have collectively turned a corner, and the new movie that stars Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg has been moved up. Sony Pictures announced that the new film, Father Stu, is being moved from an April 15th release to an April 13th release. The film was essentially meant to come out on Good Friday but has now been moved to release that Wednesday. You can check out the trailer below:
Father Stu follows the life of Stuart Long, who is a former boxer turned priest. Throughout his life, Stu tries and fails at many career choices, including wanting to become an actor. After a horrific motorcycle accident nearly takes his life, Stu changes his direction and sets his eyes on the priesthood. Though he is unconventional in his practices and seen as rough by his Catholic congregation, he inspired many people along the way. Mark Wahlberg plays the titular role of Stu, while Mel Gibson is set to play the father, Bill Long. This film could hold some high Academy Award implications. Wahlberg had apparently heard this story while out to dinner with two priests and was inspired to make it. He threw his own money into producing the film.
Although Mel Gibson has made a bunch of more underground films as of late, Father Stu looks to be like the kind of story that will see the man return to the bigger roles in Hollywood. Rosalind Ross is Gibson’s partner, and this will be her directorial debut. Ross has a shorter resume in the writing world, but from the trailer, it looks as though she is ready to take on the bigger pictures. Both Gibson and Wahlberg look to be like the perfect pairing as father and son. Wahlberg is no stranger to producing, as he has backed shows like Entourage, Ballers, and McMillions. He has also produced films that he has starred in which include The Gambler, The Fighter, and We Own the Night.
The cast has quite a few prestigious actors attached to it. Mel Gibson won an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director for Braveheart. Oscar-nominee Jacki Weaver is also set to star alongside Gibson and Wahlberg in Father Stu. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Animal Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook. Mark Wahlberg has been nominated twice for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in The Departed and Best Picture for The Fighter. Although it’s too early to say, this could be a film in which all three are nominated in some way.
The initial idea was to release the film on Good Friday, considering it is revolved around the Catholic church and religion, but it appears as if the newest Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore film is also set to release on April 15th. The moving of Father Stu to Wednesday might be a strategy to allow the film to do a bit better in the box office considering the love affair that people have with anything Harry Potter-related. Fans of Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg can check out Father Stu in theaters on April 13th.
