Mel Gibson’s Most Controversial Movie Ever Getting A Sequel
Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ sequel is set to start filming this spring.
Though Mel Gibson has been bridled in controversy plenty of times, one of his movies saw the most controversy, and it is now receiving a sequel. The Passion of the Christ is going to be getting a sequel, which is set to start filming this coming spring. The Gibson-directed drama followed the life of Jesus Christ and his subsequent violent treatment at the hands of the Romans.
Mel Gibson has confirmed many times over that the sequel will be titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. There are rumors that Jim Caviezel will also be returning to reprise the role of Jesus Christ. While the initial film showcased the horrific violence that Jesus was subjected to, this new sequel might be taking on the “Resurrection” story that followed.
The Passion of the Christ made a staggering $612 million at the worldwide box offices, against a meager budget of $30 million. This contrast would land the Mel Gibson-led movie as the highest-grossing R-rated movie to ever be made, which is something that might also happen with the sequel. There is no confirmation just yet, but Monica Bellucci has also been talked about reprising her role as Mary Magdalene, though it has not yet been confirmed.
Despite the success of The Passion of the Christ, the movie saw its fair share of heavy criticism. One of the biggest issues for the movie was that people were turned off by how violent it was, as Jesus was shown being beaten to a very high degree. Also, people stated that the story broke away from the story in the bible far too much, which could be addressed in the Mel Gibson-led sequel.
Gibson was also targeted as being an antisemite shortly after the original movie was released after he went on a drunken tirade and blamed the Jewish people for all the wars in the world. The theme of antisemitism was echoed by many critics in the movie, as the Jewish community was outraged by how they were portrayed. Mel Gibson could also be attempting to correct those issues with his upcoming sequel.
The story of Jesus has been told countless times over, and there was even a resurrection movie released in February of 2022 called Risen. However, it failed to match what The Passion of the Christ did, as Risen made $20 million worldwide against a budget of $40 million. Mel Gibson’s sequel would likely do far better than that, as many people have considered it to be the most accurate portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus.
Mel Gibson had apparently been working on his Passion of the Christ sequel since 2016, though there has not been much movement on the movie since then. Rather, there have not been many updates given to the world about when this anticipated sequel was going to release. Now that Gibson is going to start shooting the new sequel movie this spring, we would imagine it will be coming out sometime in the summer of 2024, or possibly at the end of that year.
