Meg Ryan’s Children Mortified To Watch Her Greatest Scene

By Britta DeVore | Updated

While many of us have dealt with the embarrassment of parents at one time or another, the children of celebrities have it worse on an entirely different scale. During a recent conversation with Carol Burnett for Interview magazine (as per Deadline), Sleepless in Seattle star Meg Ryan revealed that her kids have been utterly scared by the orgasm scene in 1989’s classic rom-com When Harry Met Sally. Referring to it as “a very unique embarrassment,” the star’s kids will never be able to shake the iconic scene from their heads.

“It’s funny, my son just called me this morning and he’s in New York staying at a hotel that’s right across the street from Katz’s Deli. My daughter was here and everybody was on speaker, and they were like, ‘Mom, this is a very unique embarrassment.’”

For those who may need a refresher, the scene in question sees Meg Ryan’s character Sally eating lunch at Katz’s Deli with Billy Crystal’s Harry. In between bites of the deli’s famous pastrami, Sally proves a point to her rival-turned-beau by faking an orgasm.

Not just a memorable moment for fans of the movie, the moan-filled scene has also stuck with Ryan’s kids, Jack Quaid and Daisy True Ryan for a lot longer than they’d have liked.

In fact, the booth in which Meg Ryan’s character showed off her skills is even pointed to by an arrow, making it an absolute must-stop for any fan of the film who happens to pass through the doors of Katz’s on their trip to Manhattan.

Noting this to his mother, Jack Quaid pointed out that even when he wants to eat his smoked meats, matzo ball soup, and Dr. Brown’s sodas in peace, the memories of When Harry Met Sally will continue to haunt him.

Despite being forever embarrassed by his mother’s orgasm depiction, Jack Quaid, who has made a name for himself in Hollywood by way of titles including The Boys and 2022’s Scream, is also proud of her.

During a panel for EW, the actor said that after avoiding the film for years, he finally watched it when he was making his own rom-com. Speaking about his feelings toward Meg Ryan after catching the feature, Jack Quaid said that he called his mother and apologized for missing out on it for so many years, adding, “That’s my favorite of hers.”

While the Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal-led When Harry Met Sally may be the most notorious film to have shot inside the walls of the legendary counter-service restaurant, it’s certainly not the only one. A mecca for meat lovers and cinephiles alike, Katz’s Delicatessen has found its way into a slew of titles including Across the Universe, Enchanted, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, and Donnie Brasco – just to name a few.

As much a staple to the city as The Statue of Liberty or The Empire State Building, Katz’s takes its legacy seriously, posting photos on the walls with the famous clientele who have ordered up a pastrami on rye over the years.

Next Up For Meg Ryan

Only appearing in Top Gun: Maverick through archival footage from the original film, audiences were bummed to not see Meg Ryan reprise her role in the longtime coming sequel. However, she’ll soon star opposite David Duchovny in What Happens Later. Due out later this year, the film sees Ryan return to her rom-com roots in a production that she also directed.
