Mayim Bialik Just Suffered A Huge Loss To Her Popular Series
Mayim Bialik may soon be hosting a new quiz show, but she just took a big hit on her other, other popular show.
Mayim Bialik seems to be doing pretty well these days with her co-hosting gig on Jeopardy! and a spin-off series very possibly in the works. However, she did just get a setback on her other TV job as the star of the Fox Network’s Call Me Kat. Per TVLine, the popular sitcom has just lost showrunner Alissa Neubauer after just one season. This makes the second showrunner that the series has burned through in its so-far short time on the air, as original co-executive producer Darlene Hunt left after the first season. The Mayim Bialik-starring comedy has been approved for a third season, and Maria Ferrari and Jim Patterson will be jointly serving as showrunner (for now, at least).
Call Me Kat stars Mayim Bialik as the titular character, a single 39-year-old who leaves her job as a University of Louisville math professor to open a cat cafe; the series regularly revolves around the various mishaps and misunderstandings Mayim Bialik and her group of varyingly wacky friends find themselves in. The show is loosely based on the British sitcom Miranda, which starred comedian/creator Miranda Hunt as a fictionalized version of herself who runs a toy shop (toys being the British equivalent of cats) and gets into a lot of odd situations through awkward social interactions.
The show was initially jointly produced by Mayim Bialik and Darlene Hunt (who was instrumental in transporting the series to her native Louisville), Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak of That’s Wonderful Productions, and BBC Studios represented by Angie Stephenson and original star Miranda Hunt. That is a whole lot of cooks in the kitchen, though likely not any more so than many other sitcoms. However, it does seem like the show is being passed from hand to hand as the season goes. Alissa Neubauer is a veteran of Chuck Lorre productions Mom and Two and a Half Men, which makes sense for a direct connection to The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik.
But still, having two regular shows on at once is a pretty good deal for anyone, and Mayim Bialik has at least one of them on lock down as the starring character. The state of Jeopardy! has been very much in chaos ever since iconic host Alex Trebek sadly passed away in 2020. First, there was the notorious period of revolving guest hosts (which was widely perceived as tryouts for a permanent host position). Then there was producer Mike Richards announcing the new permanent host: Mike Richards. Then there was producer/host Mike Richards stepping down after a number of highly questionable statements and alleged behavior were made public.
That resulted in fan-favorite champion Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik sharing hosting duties on Jeopardy!. Now it seems that Mayim Bialik may be getting her own solo hosting job with Celebrity Jeopardy!, though we will just have to wait and see on that one. The third season of Call Me Kat is scheduled to be released on Fox on September 29.
