Maya Hawke Is Concerned About Her Stranger Things Character’s Future
Maya Hawke plays Robin on Stranger Things, and she's both excited and skeptical about her character being in a relationship for Season 5.
With the production of Stranger Things‘ fifth and final season being put on pause indefinitely until the writers’ strike resolves, cast members have some time on their hands to reflect on their roles and the future of their characters. Maya Hawke, who was introduced in season 3 as Robin Buckley, expressed some mixed feelings she had about a potential romantic through line that may be explored in the upcoming season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
For those of you who don’t remember, Robin was Steve Harrington’s romantic interest in Season 3 before she revealed to him that she was only interested in dating girls but still wanted to be friends.
In many ways, the friendship between Robin and Steve is critical to Stranger Things‘ storytelling because of their snappy dialogue and natural on-screen chemistry. But with Season 4’s conclusion, we saw Robin start a budding relationship with Vickie, a Hawkins High marching band clarinetist who she was clearly enamored with throughout the season, leading fans to believe that they might become an item in Season 5.
In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Maya Hawke mentioned that she’s excited about this possible development but also went on record suggesting that while a relationship could be a good thing for the series, she’s not necessarily fond of this relationship being the center of Robin’s existence.
Given the complex nature of Stranger Things, it’s safe to say that we don’t really need another romantic relationship to further complicate matters, and Maya Hawke is right to be guarded in her enthusiasm. We’ve already got enough to worry about, considering all of the damage Vecna caused to the town of Hawkins, Indiana.
If a Robin/Vickie relationship is effective in pulling Robin and Steve apart in their friendship, we could stand to lose out on quite a bit of comedic relief, which is one of the reasons we keep coming back for more Stranger Things.
On the other side of the coin, some romantic tension could certainly serve the storytelling and elicit a hearty amount of laughter. Considering how well Maya Hawke and Joe Keery play off each other as Robin and Steve, we’re confident that no matter what direction their relationships take in Season 5, they’ll still be able to carry the show and even add a whole other layer of depth that we didn’t know we were missing.
Luckily for Stranger Things fans, it’s been made apparent over the years that the Duffer Brothers are receptive to feedback, and will likely consider Maya Hawkes’ concerns as they continue to develop the upcoming season. And with the writers’ strike dragging on, they have time to consider all angles while figuring out the conclusion to their iconic Netflix series.
So even though Season 4 left us with Robin and Vickie making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in an effort to feed those who have had their homes destroyed by Vecna, it’s possible that they will simply remain good friends throughout Season 5.
