Hilarious Political Comedy Series On Max Suddenly Becomes Way Too Relevant

By Nina Phillips | Published

Sitcoms have a strange habit of predicting the future and being much more relevant to life than they sometimes mean to be. Such is the case right now with the TV show Veep, which focuses on a female vice president who ends up running for president during the next election. Despite the show starting in 2012 and ending before the 2020 election even happened, the details of the upcoming presidential election and the last one have some eerie similarities.

A Political Sitcom Like No Other

Veep

Veep is a fictional sitcom about former Senator Selina Meyer. She’s been promoted to the position of Vice President after the last presidential election. While she was initially excited about the position, she quickly realized that the position is not everything it’s cracked up to be, and might be much worse than she was ever warned about.

Interestingly, though it’s a standalone show and is an American production, Veep is set in the same world as the British BBC series The Thick of It and is often considered a spin-off, especially because the director is the same. This wasn’t the first spin-off the creator Armando Iannucci (The Death of Stalin) did of his BBC series, as the movie In the Loop was also his and considered a spin-off of The Thick of It, even featuring some of the same characters.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld) plays Senator Meyer and is the main character of the show. However, there are plenty of other comedic faces in Veep, including Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Anna Chlumsky (Hannibal), Reid Scott (My Boys), Gary Cole (NCIS), Matt Walsh (The Hangover), and Timothy Simons (Inherent Vice).

Meyer Bites Off More Than She Can Chew

Veep

Veep was a hit. Throughout all seven seasons, it’s managed to retain its great reviews, with an average critic score of 93 percent and an average audience score of 90 percent.

Right now, those watching the show might be realizing how relevant Veep is, despite its meaning to be a comedic sitcom. In the series, the Senator tries to run for president but gets pushed into the vice president role. However, as the president’s term comes to an end, the female senator ends up running for the role again.

The Prophetic Elephant In The Room

Veep

The storyline of Veep sounds pretty similar to the situation going on right now, specifically with Kamala Harris. She started as a California Senator but then went on to be Biden’s VP. Now, with Biden stepping down as a presidential candidate, Harris is taking his place.

The series also delves into a darker and slightly comedic side of behind-the-scenes politics, including how media, funding, and public perception influence every situation. Though there are laughs to break the tension, viewers with a critical eye will see that it also reflects the problems with the current political situation in the United States.

The similarities were not lost on viewers. According to CBS News, after Harris took over as the nominee for the democratic party, the viewership for Season 1 of Veep jumped up by 350 percent.

If you want to see all the similarities between the real presidential situation and Veep, all seven seasons of this series are available to watch on Max.
