Max Sequel Series Ties Together A Fascinating True Crime Story

By Britta DeVore | Published

Nearly a full decade ago, HBO changed the true crime genre all over again when they released their mini-series, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. The fascinating deep-dive into the privileged life and alleged crimes of the ever-awkward businessman Robert Durst ended on a sort-of cliffhanger in what will forever be remembered as one of the hottest mic moments ever. But for those who didn’t keep up with the case after the credits rolled on part one, you can find out what happened after that bathroom confession as The Jinx: Part 2 is now streaming on Max.

Picking Up Where Season 1 Left Off

The Jinx: Part 2

For a brief refresher, the final moments of the Season 1 finale of The Jinx saw filmmaker and documentarian Andrew Jarecki catch the slimy Durst in a delicate position. With the cards stacked against him and the evidence on the table as clear as day, Durst had nowhere to hide – so he just went to the bathroom instead. While washing his hands, the show’s subject seemed to forget that he had a live mic on, which is when he inadvertently implicated himself in the crimes and set up The Jinx: Part 2 by muttering a confession to have “killed them all.”

With that, the first season of The Jinx came to an end, and if you weren’t following Robert Durst’s case in the headlines, you may not know what happened next. That’s precisely what the team digs into during The Jinx: Part 2 as they keep up with the fallout after the credits rolled on the Season 1 finale.

An Update From Behind Bars

The Jinx: Part 2

Over six episodes, Andrew Jarecki and the rest of the creative folks behind the hit HBO true-crime docuseries reunite in The Jinx: Part 2, updating audiences on Durst’s life from behind bars. As luck would have it, law enforcement was finally able to bring the alleged killer in for the murder of Susan Berman, the slaying that blew the top off of Durst’s case back in Season 1. There are a lot of familiar faces back on camera for the follow-up installment, while the documentarians also pay several visits to Durst as he serves time in the penitentiary.

The Key Witness That Clinched The Case

Another interesting angle of The Jinx: Part 2 is that of Robert Durst’s ex-friend, Nick Chavin, who was not only close with the real estate mogul and his family but also with the late Susan Berman. Torn between his loyalties to Durst and his connection with Berman, audiences watch as Chavin’s opinion on the latter’s death shifts right before their eyes. He would eventually end up serving as a witness in the prosecution’s case against Durst, and offer up some damning evidence.

The Rabbit Hole Goes Deep

The Jinx: Part 2

For those wondering about the mysterious disappearance of Robert Durst’s first wife, Kathie Durst, her story also comes back into play during The Jinx: Part 2. Viewers will catch up with her family who we heard so much from in the first batch of episodes and learn more about their fight for justice.

The Jinx: Part 2

All in all, The Jinx: Part 2 does a good job of filling in the missing pieces of Robert Durst’s life and case over the last decade since the original series aired. While some may feel that justice was never fully served, Andrew Jarecki and the rest of the minds involved do a terrific job of keeping the focus on the victims who are unable to tell their side of the story. Stream it now on Max.
