Maverick Star Wants To Make A Top Gun 3?
Top Gun: Maverick is opening to rapturous critical acclaim and likely an enormous box office, but some are already looking toward Top Gun 3.
The highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 hit film Top Gun has been released in theaters, and there may already be talk of a Top Gun 3 in the works. The most recent entry to the franchise, Top Gun: Maverick, has garnered almost universal praise from critics, while audiences are excited to watch some of their favorite characters come back to a film 36 years in the making. With all of the hype surrounding the sequel, as well as a new generation of actors coming to play in the sky, star Glen Powell is apparently fanning the flames to hopefully make another film happen in the Top Gun universe.
As reported by Screen Rant, the Everybody Wants Some!! star has stated his opinions on the possibility of Top Gun 3, and how it could possibly come to light. In a recent interview with IndieWire, the Austin native explained that for a third film to materialize, some evidence for demand for another movie would have to be outlined first. He stated, “There’s no reason in just adding another movie to the filmography of the world, if it doesn’t contribute or beat the original.” Evidently, this advice originally came from Top Gun star Tom Cruise, who also produced the sequel, and believes that sequels need to be better than the original in order for the franchise to survive.
As Top Gun: Maverick opens everywhere in theaters today, May 27th, audiences will be treated to an ensemble cast of would-be fighter pilots and charismatic personas. Leading the cast is Cruise himself, reprising the role that made him famous as the eponymous Maverick. Joining Cruise and Powell are Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, and Monica Barbaro. Val Kilmer is set to reprise his role as well, as Maverick’s enemy of sorts, Iceman. Directed by Oblivion helmer Joseph Kosinski, if this newest sequel does well, Top Gun 3 might not be out of the question.
At a budget of $170 million, Top Gun: Maverick may outperform expectations entirely. The original film grossed over $357 million against a budget of $15 million. On opening day, Rotten Tomatoes currently has the sequel rated by critics at an astounding 97% on its Tomatometer, with an Audience Score of 99%. Further evidence of the film’s appeal is demonstrated by Metacritic, which lists the movie at 79 among 59 critics’ reviews, as well as a 9.3 User Score. This marks generally favorable reviews from critics and universal acclaim from audiences who have seen the film so far. This type of admiration for a sequel may propel producers to consider Top Gun 3 in the future.
When the original Top Gun was released in 1986, Tom Cruise became a household name and the film’s soundtrack soared with fans. This time around, Lady Gaga has contributed a theme song to Top Gun: Maverick, which has already become a song fans are excited about going into the summer movie season. With returning characters to this newly cemented franchise, as well as blockbusters claiming top box office dollars in recent years, Glen Powell’s prediction of Top Gun 3 may be something to look forward to in the coming years.
