Every year on April 20th, the internet takes a trip into the realm of silliness where people share their most memorable pot-smoking stories. Some say it’s because 420 is police code for “marijuana smoking in progress”, while others cite Bob Dylan’s Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 as the source, because 12×35 equals 420. Regardless of the origin, even celebrities like Matthew McConaughey have embraced the unofficial holiday by sharing their weed-related tales.

During a 2019 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Matthew McConaughey talked about how Snoop Dogg got him high on the set of their film The Beach Bum. The actor recalled one specific scene where his character gets turned onto “magic weed”. “So the first scene that he [Snoop] and I shot together, MoonDog goes to Lingerie’s place,” the actor told viewers. “I know the scene, so I talk to the prop guy on set. I said ‘Look I got my prop joints which are oregano.’ I talk to Snoop I said, ‘These are my prop joints, oregano’ cause I know I’m gonna be pulling,” he continued.

Matthew McConaughey explained that the scene took about eight minutes to film because of all the marijuana smoking. “It’s a long take if you’re passing a joint back and forth and you’re smoking hardcore to the heels of your feet,” he told Jimmy Kimmel. The Wedding Planner star said it was at that point he realized the prop may have been the real thing. “Right after the scene I just feel like I’m not sure that was a prop. And I look over and Snoop goes, ‘Yo Moondog that wasn’t prop weed. That was Snoop weed.’” But the story doesn’t end there. According to the superstar rapper, Matthew McConaughey was high for the rest of their workday. He even went on to rap for 13 straight hours. They wrote a few songs together. But none of them were good enough to see the light of day.

Written and directed by Harmony Korine, The Beach Bum was released as an off-beat comedy in 2019. The story follows the adventures of a stoner poet named Moondog who tries to regain his daughter’s respect (and a share of his wife’s estate) by trying to finish his new book. At the time, the film, received mixed reviews from critics, with some describing it as joyous, while others called it an epic goof. It didn’t do well at the box office either, earning a disappointing $4.6 million on a $5 million budget.

Starring alongside Matthew McConaughey’s Moondog is Isla Fisher as Moondog’s wife Minnie, Stefania LaVie Owen as their daughter Heather, and Snoop Dogg as R&B singer Lingerie. Martin Lawrence appears as a dolphin tour guide and claimed Vietnam War veteran Captain Wack. Zac Efron stars as a drug rehabilitation patient and pyromaniac named Flicker. Jonah Hill plays Moondog’s agent Lewis. And Jimmy Buffett guest stars as himself, a singer and friend of Moondog and Lingerie.

Marijuana stories aside, Matthew McConaughey’s acting career has been pretty quiet lately. The actor most recently lent his voice to the lead character in 2021’s Sing 2. Directed by Garth Jennings and Christophe Lourdelet, the story begins after the events of its predecessor. Buster Moon (McConaughey) and his singing group put on a show in Redshore City, where they also try to win over an entertainment mogul by enlisting the help of a reclusive rock star. Sing 2 featured an ensemble cast alongside Matthew McConaughey. This includes the talents of Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Jennings, Peter Serafinowicz, Jennifer Saunders, and Nick Offerman.
