Matthew McConaughey happens to be a very proud Texan. This is no secret, as the man often sports Texas Longhorns gear, as he is a superfan of the college team. Now, he is finally going to be getting a part that tells one of the most miraculous stories from the state. McConaughey will be portraying Coach Bill Kinder, who led a soccer team of high school girls to China to step in as the first-ever National U.S. Woman’s Soccer Team, the Dallas Sting, which also happens to be the name of the film.

Dallas Sting currently does not have a studio attached, but the rumor is that AppleTV will be jumping in to stream the film, as the company has an overall deal with Skydance. Dallas Sting is being directed by Kari Skogland and is being produced by Skydance and Berlanti Schechter Productions. The film is set to begin production in New Orleans this fall, and there is a strong likelihood that Apple buys the rights to the film before production gets underway. Landing someone like Matthew McConaughey in the main role will likely be a huge driving force for the film to be picked quickly by Apple. The company seems to be landing great films, which could be because it became the first streaming platform to win an Academy Award.

Dallas Sting follows the journey that a high school soccer team took to become internationally known. President Reagan was attempting to open relations with China in 1984, which led the country to allow the U.S. to send over a woman’s soccer team to compete with China and other countries in the world championship that was being held. There was one issue, the U.S. did not have a professional team to compete with. A nationwide search was enacted, which called for a 19-and-under team to be found. This led to The Sting stepping in, which was a high school woman’s team from Dallas. They were named after the recently released Robert Redford film that had come out. Coach Kinder (Matthew McConaughey) then spent thousands of dollars, jumped through tons of bureaucracy, and even had to ensure through doctors that playing soccer would not hurt a woman’s ability to reproduce, just to get the team to be able to compete in China. It sounds like quite a story.

Apple has teamed up with Skydance to bring about a new wave of animated films, and they also have an overall deal with the studio on upcoming releases. Most of the programming on the streaming platform has been quite fantastic, which includes CODA, which won Best Picture. Also, the platform has Ted Lasso, which has won a ton of Emmys. It’s safe to say that Dallas Sting would fit in nicely at Apple, assuming they pick it up. Again, with Matthew McConaughey attached to star, Apple might jump at the chance to purchase the rights.

Dallas Sting is set to start production in the fall, as previously mentioned, which could mean that we are going to be seeing the film premiere sometime in the fall of 2023. Besides Matthew McConaughey, there have been no other casting announcements thus far. We expect to hear more about who will join the actor in this great story.
