Matt Smith Perfectly Responds To Morbius Being A Flop
Matt Smith is set to star in the new Game of Thrones spinoff series, but the man has also perfectly responded to the question of Morbius being a flop.
Morbius became a box office flop by every measure. Even when the studio decided to release the film back into theaters after the hilarious “It’s Morbin Time” meme went viral on the internet, things did not go well. Sometimes superhero movies just flop. It’s not necessarily the actor’s fault, which is something that Matt Smith has discussed. Smith played the villain Lucien Crown in the film. Now, he perfectly responded to the film being a flop. According to Smith, “Yeah, it was thrown under the bus. But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and… It is what it is.”
Matt Smith seems to have the right idea about letting go of Morbius being a flop. The actors did what they were hired to do, and the film just did not simply work out in their favor. We are not entirely what Smith is referring to when he stated the film had been “thrown under the bus” but it could mean that he thinks promotion might not have gone the way it was supposed to. There could be many factors that led to Morbius being a flop, which mostly comes on the heels of Sony making superhero films in general. Although both Venom films were successful, most of the lineup before that has been a bit underwhelming. Also, it could be that people are suffering from too much superhero content. With the MCU and Sony trying to release things in tandem, it can be a lot of content to get through.
Matt Smith does know how to handle flops, as he was part of Terminator: Genisys, which was also a flop. That led to that franchise being put on hold until Tim Miller tried to revive the franchise with Terminator: Dark Fate, which also flopped. Basically, Smith knows that certain movies don’t work out, and while he does seem to be a bit upset, he is just moving on with his life. That is something that everyone should do. Despite Morbius being a flop in theaters, it did have quite a good digital release, which means there is a market for the film. The film led home sales in June, beating out other films like The Batman, The Bad Guys, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. That is something to be proud of.
Morbius flopping might not warrant a second film, but Sony is still trying to build its SpiderVerse. El Muerto, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter are all being worked on, and are meant to serve as the sort of Sinister Six type of team-up for the next Spider-Man to take on. Tom Holland does want to step away from the role, so we might be seeing Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire return. Matt Smith is likely not going to return to the franchise any time soon, and the same might be said for Jared Leto. However, his character could play a much larger part in whatever plans Sony has for the future. Morbius has always been kind of an anti-hero of sorts, and he did link up with Michael Keaton’s Vulture in the film, so maybe it will be “Morbin’ Time” at some point.
