Matt Smith Starring In Marvel’s Fantastic Four Movie?
Matt Smith, best known for his portrayal of Doctor Who and his performance in House of the Dragon, is rumored to be up for a major role in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie reboot. Namely, Smith is rumored to portray none other than Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, in the upcoming film, though we have to stress that nothing has been officially confirmed.
According to CBR, Daniel Richtman, a known entertainment scooper, stated that Matt Smith was offered a role in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie shortly before the SAG-AFTRA strike. However, the strike affected the pre-production of the film, and the casting process is currently on hold, so it’s unclear whether he was cast in the film or not.
Entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman recently said that Matt Smith has been offered the role of Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.
It’s important to note that Smith is one of many who have been reportedly cast for the role of Mister Fantastic, so it’s important to take all information with a grain of salt, as no official confirmation has been made yet.
This isn’t the first time Matt Smith’s name was associated with the Fantastic Four movie or Reed Richards. However, according to various critics and industry insiders, he was never considered a serious contender for the role, so it’s quite possible that Richtman’s information isn’t factual.
Recent reports claim that Adam Driver passed on the role of Reed Richards.
The MCU’s Fantastic Four still hasn’t been officially cast, and previous rumors suggested that Adam Driver—Kylo Ren from Star Wars—was also offered the role of Reed Richards. However, most recent reports claimed that Driver passed on the role as he couldn’t connect with the character.
2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was an absolute blast, as it introduced several highly anticipated characters from the broader Marvel Comics Universe, signaling the approach of their respective franchises to the MCU. Not only did we get to see Professor X, but we also saw John Krasinski as a variant of Reed Richards, and the fans have been calling for his return to the character ever since the movie came out.
Unfortunately, the actor himself cast doubt on that possibility, and so did Sam Raimi in the director’s commentary for Multiverse of Madness.
Other Fantastic Four Casting Possibilities
Besides Matt Smith’s alleged casting as Reed Richards of Fantastic Four, the rumor mill will likely continue to spew out names until all four are officially announced by the MCU. Rumors suggest that Margot Robbie and Mila Kunis turned down the role of Sue Storm, with Vanessa Kirby of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning emerging as the top contender for the role. Austin Butler and Paul Mescal have been associated with Human Torch for some time now, and Daveed Diggs is rumored to voice The Thing.
With everything said, Matt Smith’s casting in the upcoming Fantastic Four remains under a massive question mark. There wasn’t any official confirmation; those close to the industry state that he actually isn’t a serious contender for the role, and Streamr Entertainment independently confirmed via Smith’s representatives that he wasn’t cast in the upcoming movie.
“Wasn’t” doesn’t mean “won’t be,” so the only thing we can do is sit and wait for Marvel to finally announce the names portraying the comic book world’s first family.
