Until 2021, we had a bit of a Matt Damon drought. The acclaimed actor appeared in Ford v Ferrari in 2019 and then we didn’t see him in any roles during the peak of the pandemic. However, 2021 saw Damon return to form and bring us two new starring roles. The more notable of the two was certainly Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel which also starred Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, and Jodie Comer. A more overlooked movie he released that same year was Stillwater. However, it seems like streaming is giving it a bit of a second life, as the movie hit #1 on Hulu’s streaming charts in the US today. If you happened to miss this Matt Damon performance, now seems like a good time to check it out.
Stillwater stars Matt Damon as a worker on an oil rig. He’s called to Marseille by his estranged daughter, learning that she’s in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. He decides to stay in France in order to find a way to prove his daughter’s innocence. It’s not too surprising that Stillwater was a little overlooked. It doesn’t have quite the same hook as The Last Duel and the reviews were fairly mixed upon its release. Currently, it holds 74% from critics and 72% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The general consensus is the characters and the performances are strong, but the pace is slow and the ending is a little disappointing. Still, it seems like it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of Damon.
In addition to Matt Damon, Stillwater stars Camille Cottin, Abigail Breslin, Lilou Siauvaud, Deanna Dunagan, Idir Azougli, Anne Le Ny, Moussa Maaskri, and more. Tom McCarthy directed and co-wrote the script with Marcus Hinchey and Thomas Bidegain. Since it’s currently #1 on Hulu, that seems like it would be the best place to check it out if you’re interested.
If you’re looking for a Matt Damon movie with a little more momentum, The Last Duel is also streaming on HBO Max. The Last Duel came out in 2021 as well and received an 85% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% from audiences. Particular praise was given to Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer, and Adam Driver for their performances. The movie tells the real historic tale of the last sanctioned duel in France between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris. This is a period drama that took place during the Hundred Years War. Ridley Scott directed with a script that is co-written by Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck. It was the first time that Damon and Affleck worked on a script together since their Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting.
It won’t be long until we get to see Matt Damon in theaters again. He’s supposed to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, reprising his role as “Actor Loki” and Asgardian who has played the role of Loki in plays. It will likely be a small cameo role, but it will be fun seeing Damon play a humorous role again. That movie is set to hit theaters on July 8. His next big starring role will be in a decidedly more serious affair with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in 2023. Oppenheimer will tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in developing the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy will be playing the titular role, and Damon is set to play Leslie Groves Jr. The star-studded cast will also include Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, and more.
One of the more interesting projects on Matt Damon’s upcoming docket is an untitled movie about Nike pursuing Michael Jordan. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will once again be teaming up to pen the screenplay, with a Black List screenplay from Alex Convery. Ben Affleck will be starring as Nike co-founder Phil Knight as well as directing. Matt Damon will be starring as Sonny Vaccaro, the Nike employee who eventually signed Jordan. No actor is signed on to play Jordan himself yet, but Viola Davis and Julius Tennon are on to play Michael Jordan’s parents. Until then, you can check out Stillwater and The Last Duel on streaming today.
