Matt Damon has been part of a few franchises at this point, and personally, we’d welcome a return to any of them. The dude is so talented and has made it a point to take on a number of different characters over the years, so having him up on screen in almost any fashion is more than worth it. And recently, he let on that he’d be willing to return to one of those franchises, one of the truly great ensemble set of movies to have come along in the last few decades. In a talk with Good Morning America (via MovieWeb) Matt Damon discussed the possibility of returning to the Oceans franchise and how he’d be open to another movie under certain conditions.
In the interview, Matt Damon let on his willingness to return to a possible Oceans 14 but would need to have Steven Soderbergh on board for starters. Damon said that if the former had a script ready then he would definitely be open to the possibility of a fourth movie in this franchise, another heist to pull off with the crew. Here is what Matt Damon had to say about the idea:
“It would always be up to Steven Soderbergh if there was a story…We have lost a couple of our members, so we would have to figure it out, we are a depleted gang now, “
So, for starters, Matt Damon reiterates that he would really only be initially interested in an Oceans 14 if Soderbergh were fully on board. He directed all three movies in this franchise, though the scripts were handled by a number of different writers along the way. And Damon is also referring to having lost certain members of the group. That would be Bernie Mac who played Frank Catton and Carl Reiner who played Saul Bloom. Both were integral to previous stories and having a heist/ caper without them could feel a bit off.
But, in general, it is exciting to think about Matt Damon in another movie in the Oceans franchise. The first flick, Oceans 11 pulled off the “Benedict Job”, a takedown of the three casinos the MGM, Mirage, and MGM Grand. It was an awesome movie, with twists, turns, head fakes, and hoodwinks that leaned into its story as much as it did the sleek visuals and all-star cast. That included Damon as Linus Caldwell, the pickpocket turned con-man, and of course George Clooney and Brad Pitt as Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan respectively. Other cast members included Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Elliot Gould, Eddie Jamison, and Shoabo Qin.
All eleven would reprise their roles in the two sequels, picking up crew members along the way for Oceans 12 and Oceans 13. While neither movie was able to fully recreate the perfectly-timed cadence of the first movie, they were solid in their own right. And Matt Damon, to his credit, saw his role in the movies and the capers expand each time.
Matt Damon is just coming off the release of Stillwater, a very different movie for the actor in which he plays a roughneck who has to go to France when his daughter is accused of murder. It is a fish-out-of-water thriller/ drama that has earned the actor rave reviews for his performance even if the script didn’t totally get there. Next up will be The Last Duel which will see Damon and long-time friend and creative partner Ben Affleck teaming up for a period piece set in medieval times. Here is to hoping he and the Oceans crew get back together at some point as well.
