The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just recruited yet another Hollywood star. Ever since the game-changing success of Iron Man in 2008, Marvel Studios has been adding notable names to their acting stable by the handful. According to our trusted and proven sources, the latest person to join up is none other than Ramona Flowers herself. Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be an upcoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and while we do not yet have many details about her role, we have a pretty good hunch.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is most likely joining Marvel during the current Phase Four, which has rapidly expanded from their billion-dollar grossing theatrical film base to include a number of streaming services on Disney+. This has allowed the MCU to more rapidly push their currently mysterious narrative forward with shows like Ms. Marvel, Loki, and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but it does also require them to enlist more and more stars to fill out their ranks. As such, we have a strong suspicion that Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be showing up in one of these Marvel shows (and possibly more than one) as Abigail Brand, Commander of S.W.O.R.D.
While Abigail Brand is not one of the most well-known characters in Marvel Comics, but one that would fit in perfectly with several elements that have been recently brought into the MCU. Since the main MCU spy agent S.H.I.E.L.D. came crashing down in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there has been a void of superhero intelligence operations. S.W.O.R.D. (or Sentient World Observation and Response Department) was introduced in the WandaVision limited series as currently monitoring and protecting the world from extraterrestrial or otherworldly threats, which basically makes it the replacement. So how does this fit in with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
One of the major upcoming Disney+ series is Secret Wars, starring Samuel L. Jackson as MCU constant presence Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as former agent Maria Hill, Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull leader Talos, and Emilia Clarke in a so-far undisclosed role (which we have some suspicions about). Given that the series will center around an invasion of the Earth by Skrull shapechangers, it would make sense for S.W.O.R.D. to get involved and for us to see who is in charge now that Monica Rambeau is off doing heroics as part of The Marvels. Given that Mary Elizabeth Winstead has increasingly been shifting to action movie roles, she could play the role of the half-alien, hardbitten commander Abigail Brand quite well. Plus, she has already proved she can pull off green hair, so problem solved there.
We will have to watch and wait for confirmation of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Abigail Brand, but regardless, we will be interested to see her take on a role in the franchise. If she is playing Abigail Brand, she could even become something of a new Nick Fury, and that is something to get excited about.
