Marvel’s Worst Movie Originally Looked Completely Different
Marvel’s Eternals was widely criticized by audiences, though some parts of the movie got fans excited or that they found enjoyable. One was the reveal of the characters Eros (Harry Styles) and Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt), who are two cosmic characters well-liked by comic book fans. Interestingly, Pip’s design went through quite a few versions before they settled on the version we saw in the movie.
Pip the Troll in Marvel comics looks vastly different from what we saw in Eternals, and the early concept art combines his classic and new designs.
This leaked concept art of Pip the Troll gives us some visuals that are way different from the version ultimately seen in the post-credits scene, along with some versions that are pretty close to what we got. Unfortunately, there’s really no telling when we might see Styles’ Eros or Oswalt’s Pip in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again, as there have been no official announcements about more Eternals content. While there have been mentions about the team returning in some form in the future, Kevin Feige has not given a final word on when or where those characters would come back.
Marvel included the usual post-credits scene in Eternals, introducing Patton Oswalt as Pip the Troll and Harry Styles as Eros.
There’s no denying that Chloe Zhao made a visually beautiful film with Marvel’s Eternals, and some elements of the film were certainly interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the film didn’t land with critics and audiences compared to some of the other MCU efforts. However, one of the strangest things about the film is how little it has affected the rest of the Marvel storyline.
While there’s nothing wrong with a more self-contained MCU film that does its own thing, the events of Eternals would have undoubtedly had world-shaking consequences for the rest of the Marvel universe. A giant god-like being appears in the sky over Earth at one point, and another giant god-like being comes up through the ocean before dying and leaving a giant head and hand sticking out of the sea. However, these events have hardly been brought up in-universe in other MCU films or TV shows.
The events of Marvel’s Eternals will have to play into the ongoing storyline of the MCU eventually, but there’s no telling when that might be. While the characters made it a point to stay out of human affairs (other than protecting them from Deviants), the events of the film show that this won’t be the case anymore. So, it’s likely we could see the titular team join up with the Avengers or other heroes at some point if the threat is big enough.
Marvel has not indicated that there will be an Eternals sequel or even if the characters will ever appear again.
Naturally, this would lead one to assume that Marvel would potentially bring back some of the characters from Eternals in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it might be a little jarring for all of them to return for those films without being introduced in some other projects beforehand, especially since the end of the film saw some of the team members on a mission to find the other members taken by the Celestials. For now, there’s no way to tell when the Eternals might return, and we’ll likely have to be guessing about it for the foreseeable future.
