Entire Marvel Team Jumps Over To DC For Superman: Legacy
When Disney fired James Gunn over old Tweets, the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise threatened to walk off unless the director was re-hired. That same loyalty still holds today as Gunn prepares to ramp up production on Superman: Legacy, his first film in charge of DC’s new movie universe. This time, almost all of the VFX crew behind Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has moved on with him to work on the new Superman reboot.
James Gunn Congratulated The Team’s Oscar Nomination
On Instagram, James Gunn shared how happy he was over the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX team receiving an Oscar nomination for their work, citing how great they did with Groot, Rocket, Lylla, Floor, and Teefs. Towards the end of his comment, Gunn dropped the news that he was bringing them over to work on Superman: Legacy. Considering that the visual effects and raw emotion from the CGI creatures were a highlight of the last successful Marvel film, it seems like the new DC Universe is already in good hands.
Marvel’s History With VFX Artists
The news of an entire VFX team jumping ship from Marvel to DC for the flagship Superman: Legacy no less follows after months of news reports about Marvel mistreating VFX staff. Back in August, the staff at Marvel’s largest VFX studio decided to vote on unionizing, citing long hours, high rates of burnout, low pay, and horrible treatment from management as to why the historic step was taken. Disney executives were named as being part of the problem, as it quickly exposed the dark underbelly of the House That Mickey Built.
Fans Have Noticed Poor VFX In Marvel Movies
Post-Endgame, it’s been clear that something was off at Marvel, from the writing to the costumes, and especially the VFX; the magic seemingly vanished overnight. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, and streaming shows like She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, have been called out by fans for looking cheap and shoddily made. The result is that now is the best time for Warner Bros to re-launch the DC Universe, and so far, James Gunn has been saying and doing all the right things to get fans excited for Superman: Legacy.
James Gunn Found His Superman
David Corenswet, known for the horror film Pearl and the series The Politician, has been tapped by James Gunn for Superman: Legacy as the latest to wear the tights and cape. He’s joined by Rachel Brosnahan, star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as the latest Lois Lane. Former Marvel star Nicolas Hoult will be Lex Luthor, and while that’s already a great cast, Gunn has made more announcements that have fans losing their minds.
Superman: Legacy Will Bring Fan Favorites To Life
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX team aren’t the only James Gunn collaborators making the jump to DC, as Nathan Fillion, a long-time friend, will appear in Superman: Legacy as Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns. Edi Gathegi, Nicolas Hoult’s X-Men First Class co-star, will play Mr. Terrific. Isabela Merced, star of the upcoming Madame Web, is the next Hawkgirl, while the break-out star of Barry Anthony Carrigan is the fan-favorite Metamorpho.
Will James Gunn Make The Best Superman Movie Yet?
Superman: Legacy is only the first film of what James Gunn has called the “Gods and Monsters” first phase of the new DC Universe. Over ten years after Man of Steel hit theaters, when Warner Bros was constantly playing catch up to Disney, it would appear that the roles have been reversed. Gunn bringing over actors and crew that he’s worked with before and trusts is yet another step in the right direction.
